BENlabs Shuts Down as Gates Ventures Pulls Funding

BENlabs, the product placement and Influencer Marketing agency founded by Bill Gates in 1989, is winding down operations after 37 years. The Influencer Marketing team was laid off in March, with product placement client work ending this month, according to Campaign US. The company has not issued a public statement confirming the closure.

Originally founded as Interactive Home Systems, the company operated under several names over the decades, including Corbis, Branded Entertainment Network, and BENlabs. Gates Ventures served as the agency’s primary financial backer throughout its history.

Why It Closed

Financial difficulties accelerated around 2024, when Gates provided what former employees described as a final investment, contingent on BENlabs reaching independent profitability that year. The company was unable to meet that target, and Gates Ventures stopped funding the ongoing losses. Former employees said the company carried notable debt obligations after funding ended, and attempts to sell the product placement and creator divisions did not result in a deal.

BENlabs underwent multiple restructurings in 2024 and 2025, including large-scale layoffs and leadership changes, as the company attempted to pivot toward AI before shifting back toward core services, including product placement, Influencer Marketing, and TubeBuddy.

CEO Ted Sheffield exited the company in January 2026, with no public successor announced. In February 2026, GameSquare entered an agreement to acquire TubeBuddy, BENlabs’ creator analytics and YouTube optimization platform. Impacted staff are reportedly receiving up to three months of severance.
