Spotify Launches Running Mode, Its First AI-Personalized Workout Feature

Spotify has introduced Running Mode, a new feature inside its Fitness Hub that builds running playlists around a listener’s tempo, workout structure, and music taste. The feature is live for Premium subscribers on iOS in the U.S., Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden.

Users select from 25 curated running presets, then customize their workout type, choosing between interval, steady, or pyramid formats, along with duration, beats per minute, and preferred music mood. Once set, Spotify matches track tempo to the chosen pace and transitions between songs to keep the pacing consistent through the run. The feature also offers optional English-language audio cues that guide users through the workout without interrupting the music.

Running Mode builds on Prompted Playlists, the AI feature Spotify expanded in January. According to Spotify, fitness-related prompts became one of the most popular uses of that feature, a pattern the company says directly informed Running Mode’s development.

The launch also extends Spotify’s push into fitness content, following an April partnership with Peloton that brought Peloton classes and creator workout videos onto the platform. Running Mode is designed to sit alongside that content as another entry point for fitness-minded listeners rather than a standalone product.

Running Mode arrives roughly two months after Strava, the running and cycling tracking app, discontinued Spotify integration within its Record feature, according to a Strava support notice. Spotify is now building a native running experience of its own at the same moment one of the category’s most established apps has moved to decouple from it.
