YouTube’s Creator Economy Contributes €7 Billion To EU GDP, Supports 200,000 Jobs

YouTube’s creative ecosystem added more than €7 billion to the European Union’s GDP while supporting more than 200,000 full-time equivalent jobs, according to a new report from Oxford Economics published on the YouTube Blog.

The platform’s revenue-sharing model distributes the majority of earnings to creators, artists, and media companies. Globally, YouTube has paid out $100 billion to content partners over the past four years.

The number of EU-based channels earning five figures or more in revenue grew by over 15% last year. This growth transforms passion projects into businesses with real economic impact.

German creator Marie of Wurzelwerk exemplifies this trend, building a company that now employs 27 people. “I want my channel to feel like we’re neighbors talking over the garden fence,” Marie said.

Platform Serves Educational Functions

Beyond economic contributions, the report highlights YouTube’s role as an information resource:

  • 93% of users use the platform to gather information and knowledge
  • 80% of parents who use YouTube or YouTube Kids agree it provides quality content for children’s learning or entertainment
  • 84% of teachers who use YouTube report incorporating its content in lessons or assignments

Beyond Oxford Economics’ findings, independent research from creative agency Livity highlights YouTube’s role in learning among European teens. The study, covering more than 7,000 respondents across seven countries, found that 74% of teenagers aged 13-18 use the platform for school-related learning, while 71% turn to it for learning outside the classroom. Among educators, two-thirds (67%) agreed that YouTube helps increase student engagement.

European Success Stories Emerge

The research points to diverse creator success stories across Europe. Czech journalist Honza Dědek has transformed his YouTube talk show into a multi-platform media operation.

Meanwhile, the team behind Lyynk is focused on creating content addressing youth mental health, demonstrating the platform’s utility beyond entertainment.

David Wheeldon, Senior Director of Government Affairs and Public Policy for YouTube EMEA, noted that in the two decades since YouTube launched, it has reshaped entertainment and opportunity across Europe, with creators building businesses, shaping culture, and generating significant economic impact.

The full report provides additional details on how European creators leverage the platform to build sustainable businesses and reach global audiences.
