NFL YouTube Content Attracts 20B Views As League Cultivates Digital Strategy

The National Football League’s video content accumulated more than 20 billion views on YouTube in 2025, according to a new “Culture & Trends Report” released by YouTube examining the league’s digital expansion.

NFL-related content on YouTube experienced 250% growth in annual global views between 2020 and 2025, according to YouTube data. The platform’s research indicates the NFL has matured from operating a single YouTube channel launched in 2015 to maintaining 11 official channels across four languages, in addition to individual NFL club channels.

The league’s digital presence extends beyond game coverage. More than 30% of NFL-related views in 2025 occurred between the conclusion of the Super Bowl and the start of the regular season, demonstrating year-round engagement with football content.

Draft Coverage and Content Creation

Videos related to the NFL generated over 250 million views during the three-day 2025 NFL Draft period from April 24-26, 2025. The data reflects the league’s strategy of “leaning into offseason moments” and creating “platform-native formats.”

Annual global uploads of NFL-related videos increased by over 400% between 2020 and 2025, according to YouTube. The report notes that “fan-created content is a key component of the heartbeat of the League’s fandoms and prioritizes fan identity and perspective at scale.”

Gen Z Engagement Patterns

A SmithGeiger study commissioned by Google and conducted in April 2025 surveyed online 14- to 24-year-olds in the United States about sports content consumption.

The research found 82% turn to YouTube for “content, conversation, or information about what they’re a fan of,” with 95% of that group using YouTube to consume fan content at least weekly.

Among Gen Z sports fans, 56% watch or engage with sports commentary and analysis from creators or fans weekly or more often. The same percentage indicated they “love seeing more of their favorite professional athletes in videos outside of sports events.”

Athlete Content Consumption

The SmithGeiger study also examined athlete-driven content preferences. Among Gen Z sports fans, 57% listen to or engage with podcasts or other athlete-created videos at least weekly.

The report states that fans “no longer just want to watch athletes perform; they want to understand who they are.” The research indicates NFL athletes “have gained the ability to take off their helmets and contextualize their careers, personalities, and perspectives in their own words.”

Methodology

YouTube’s Culture & Trends team researched video trends in football and fandom over several years. SmithGeiger conducted surveys with respondents aged 14-49 who were active online in the United States. The Gen Z sports fan sample consisted of 365 online respondents ages 14-24.

The report describes NFL football as having transformed into “an always-on entertainment universe in which every game and offseason event fuels an ongoing narrative that extends far beyond the field” through the league’s “embrace of new media entry points.”
