New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani launched a Twitch livestream series called “Talk with the People” on May 21, drawing 8,426 peak concurrent viewers and debuting at number three in the platform’s “Talk Shows and Podcasts” category, according to data from Streams Charts. The inaugural episode aired on the “nyc_mayor” channel and ran for 35 minutes.
The Mayor’s office stated the series will also be distributed on YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and other major social platforms. “We’re opening up a direct line of conversation between our government and the people, especially younger generations who’ve been ignored for too long,” Mamdani said.
Debut Broadcast
The first episode featured NYC-based TikTok creator Mustafa “Moosenyc” as co-host, who spent much of the stream coaching Mamdani on internet culture, including addressing the audience as “chat” rather than “ladies and gentlemen.”
The Mayor covered policy topics, including his budget deficit solution, changes to SNAP eligibility in New York City, ongoing efforts to deliver free childcare, and his campaign promise to make bus services fast and free. Mamdani said he expects to fulfill the bus pledge before the end of his term in 2030.
The broadcast faced operational issues stemming from a lack of chat moderators. Without moderation, users spammed the chat with ASCII art and explicit messages, prompting Moosenyc to ask viewers to “try to be a little respectful” and “keep it family friendly.” Mamdani’s unfamiliarity with gaming culture also drew attention when he described Minecraft as “a movie that I knew was based on a video game.”
Viewership and Reaction
The debut ranked among the three most popular “Talk Shows and Podcasts” streams on Twitch during its airdate. Prominent political creators, including Hasan “HasanAbi” Piker, Dave “The Rubin Report” Rubin, and Nicolas “sneako” Balinthazy covered the stream, each noting the disconnect between the chat audience and Mamdani and how sustained trolling affected the program. Viewers broadly identified chat moderation as the primary area needing improvement. No date for the next episode has been announced.
Digital Strategy
The Twitch series continues a pattern of digital engagement that shaped Mamdani’s path to City Hall. Before his election, his campaign hosted more than 70 content creators at its headquarters for an influencer-only briefing that reached a combined audience of more than 77 million users across social platforms. The campaign also organized “Creators for Zohran,” a grassroots group led by Aidan Kohn-Murphy, founder of Gen Z for Change, and Alexis Williams, a content creator and engineer.
