Skift to Launch Creator Summit as Travel Brands Rethink How They Value Influencer Partnerships

Travel industry media company Skift will hold its first Creator Summit on September 22, 2026, in New York City, bringing together around 100 senior travel industry decision-makers to address how creator-led content is reshaping travel demand. The closed-door forum runs alongside Skift Global Forum and is presented by Meta.

The summit responds to a shift in how travelers discover and book trips. According to Skift Research’s “Global Traveler Mindset and Trends 2026,” social media now accounts for 36% of trip discovery, compared with 41% for search, a gap the report says is closing. Among Millennial and Gen Z travelers, social media has become the dominant discovery channel: Skift Research’s “Social Commerce in Travel” found 57% cite social media as a top planning source, more than six times the next-closest channel.

Skift Research estimates social media inspires as much as $115 billion in travel demand across hotels, short-term rentals and airlines, while actual bookings made through social channels are estimated at around $7 billion. The gap between inspiration and conversion is a focus of the summit’s agenda.

Skift cited one example from its own recent reporting: a New York-based creator with just over 6,000 followers generated approximately $30,000 in sales for a Midtown hotel over 60 days from a single affiliate post, earning roughly $1,500 on a 5% commission.

Follower count is playing a diminished role in how brands select creator partners. A CreatorIQ survey cited by Skift found that just 8% of brands rank follower count as their top factor in creator selection. Separately, eMarketer data shows creators with under 20,000 followers now account for nearly half of U.S. influencer marketing spend, up from under 20% in 2021.

The summit will also examine how creator spend and primary campaign spend at many travel brands are managed by separate teams under separate budgets, limiting coordination between the two. Sessions will address how brands match creators to campaigns at scale, how to measure programs that blend brand and performance goals, how creators maintain credibility amid a rise in AI-generated content, and whether brands should build proprietary creator networks, use platform marketplaces, or work through agencies.

Attendees are expected to include chief marketing and growth officers, along with heads of brand, social, media, and performance functions from airlines, hotels, online travel agencies, cruise lines, and short-term rental platforms, as well as destination marketing, loyalty, and partnership leaders. Attendance is limited, and applications are reviewed for role and fit.
