Inside TikTok’s Plan To Transform How Users Save Music

TikTok is reportedly testing a new feature allowing users to pre-save upcoming albums directly to their Spotify or Apple Music libraries. 

First reported by Music Ally, the move builds on TikTok’s existing “Add to Music App” functionality and follows similar initiatives from competitors, including Instagram’s recent launch of comparable music-saving capabilities.

Pre-saves, which require users to actively opt in for future music releases, serve as a key metric for the music industry. Spotify reported at its 2023 Stream On event that over 80% of pre-save users stream new releases within the first week of availability.

Recent success stories highlight the feature’s potential impact. According to Rolling Stone, artist David Kushner secured 146,000 pre-saves for “Miserable Man” and 137,000 for “Mr. Forgettable. “

Currently, artists typically rely on third-party services like Linkfire and Feature.FM to create pre-save links for their TikTok marketing campaigns. Spotify introduced its native pre-save feature in 2023, suggesting a broader industry shift toward integrated music-saving capabilities.

TikTok recently announced it would discontinue its music-streaming application, TikTok Music, on November 28. Ole Obermann, TikTok’s Global Head of Music Business Development, stated that the closure is to focus on “furthering TikTok’s role in driving even greater music listening and value on music streaming services, for the benefit of artists, songwriters, and the industry.”
