Snap has acquired spatial augmented reality (AR) company Illumix to support its Specs AR glasses development, the company told Variety. Snap did not disclose the deal’s financial terms.

Illumix, founded in 2017 by CEO Kirin Sinha, built AR products designed to bring the digital and physical worlds closer together. The company developed mapping technology for real-world experiences and focused on integrating AI into physical spaces. Its past work includes co-developing an AR version of the video game “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” which launched in 2019. Snap will adopt Illumix’s technology and platform and will retain most of its staff.

Building Out the Specs Platform

Snap launched Specs Inc., a dedicated AR glasses subsidiary, in January. The company plans to share further product updates at the Augmented World Expo in Long Beach, California, on June 16. 

Specs are standalone, see-through glasses that overlay digital content onto the physical environment, enabling users to see, hear, and interact with digital experiences in real space. The glasses have been available to developers since 2024, with a consumer release planned for later this year.

In April, Specs Inc. signed a multi-year strategic agreement with Qualcomm Technologies to use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR system-on-a-chip platforms for future Specs generations. The deal covers joint development of on-device AI, graphics capabilities, and multiuser digital experiences. Qualcomm has powered multiple generations of Snap’s Spectacles hardware, giving the two companies more than five years of shared development history.

“We believe the future of computing will be more human and grounded in the real world,” said Evan Spiegel, co-founder and CEO of Snap.

Snap reported revenue of $1.53 billion in Q1 2026, up 12% year over year, and narrowed its net loss to $89 million from $139.6 million in the prior-year period. Snap also reported a 28% year-over-year rise in Lenses developed for glasses. In its quarterly shareholder letter, the company described smartglasses as “the most important computing platform transition since the smartphone.”
