Snap Locks In Qualcomm as Long-Term Chip Partner for Specs AR Eyewear Platform
Specs Inc., a Snap subsidiary focused on augmented reality (AR) eyewear, has signed a multi-year strategic agreement with Qualcomm Technologies to power future generations of its Specs glasses with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR system-on-a-chip (SoC) platforms, the companies announced.
The agreement covers joint development of on-device AI, graphics capabilities, and multiuser digital experiences. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR platforms have previously powered multiple generations of Snap’s Spectacles hardware, giving the two companies more than five years of shared development history.
About Specs
Specs are standalone, see-through glasses designed to overlay digital content onto the physical environment, allowing users to see, hear, and interact with digital experiences in real space. Snap plans to release the product to consumers later this year. Since 2024, the glasses have been available exclusively to developers.
Snap spun off Specs Inc. as a dedicated subsidiary earlier this year. In February, the company parted ways with Scott Myers, its SVP of Specs, according to TechCrunch.
“We believe the future of computing will be more human and grounded in the real world,” said Evan Spiegel, co-founder and CEO of Snap. “Our work with Qualcomm provides a strong foundation for the future of Specs, bringing developers and consumers advanced technology and performance that pushes the boundaries of what’s possible.”
Developer Platform
The agreement establishes what both companies describe as a scalable foundation for developers and partners building applications for the Specs platform. Qualcomm and Specs Inc. will align on long-term roadmap planning and technical collaboration to support a consistent product release cadence.
“Our work on future generations of Specs will enable power-efficient interactive AR devices that deliver agentic experiences that feel natural, intuitive, and integrate seamlessly into daily life,” said Cristiano Amon, President and CEO of Qualcomm.
