Meta Adds 10,000-Character Text Attachments To Threads

Meta launched a new feature for, allowing users to attach up to 10,000 characters of text to posts, significantly extending the platform’s original 500-character limit. The expansion addresses user behavior where people share screenshots of longer content, such as from books, articles, newsletters, and podcast transcripts.

The text attachment option is accessible through a new icon in the post composer, taking users to a blog-style editor. Viewers can access the expanded content via a “Read more” prompt within posts.

“Any attached text can be read directly in Threads to help you convey more complex perspectives, draw your audience in, and promote your work,” Meta explained in its announcement.

Unlike competitor X’s approach to longer content, which encourages keeping content entirely within its platform, Threads is positioning this feature to support the promotion of external content. Users sharing previews from other platforms can include links to the full content in their main post.

Meta emphasized that Threads doesn’t penalize the reach of posts containing external links, potentially making the platform more attractive to content creators looking to drive traffic to their websites.

Growth Trajectory Continues

The feature arrives as Threads reached 400 million monthly active users, adding 50 million users in recent months. Mobile usage rose to 115.1 million daily active users in June, up 128% year-over-year, narrowing the gap with X’s 132 million.

While web traffic remains a challenge for Threads, which drew 6.9 million daily visits compared to X’s 145.8 million, the platform continues to develop its identity. Meta reports that 63% of posts are text-only, and users typically follow different accounts than they do on Instagram.

This text expansion feature joins other recent platform enhancements, including improved analytics for creators, trending topics, live sports scores, developer API support, and advertising options introduced when the platform surpassed 320 million monthly users earlier this year.
