Threads Hits 400 Million Monthly Users, Narrowing Mobile Gap With X

Meta’s Threads has reached 400 million monthly active users, closing the gap with competitor X in mobile usage while continuing to expand platform features for creators and advertisers.

As Fast Company reports, the social networking app has added 50 million monthly users in just a few months, representing significant growth from the 175 million users it reported around its first anniversary last summer. Launched in July 2023 with 100 million signups in its first days, Threads continues its trajectory toward CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s stated goal of one billion users.

Mobile usage data shows particularly strong momentum. According to Similarweb, Threads reached 115.1 million daily active mobile users in June, up 128% year-over-year. This narrows the gap with X, which reported 132 million daily mobile users but saw a 15% year-over-year decline.

In the U.S. market, the competition is even tighter, with X at 22.9 million daily mobile users compared to Threads’ 15.3 million. However, web traffic remains a weakness for Threads, which drew 6.9 million daily visits in June versus X’s 145.8 million.

Platform Development

Meta continues enhancing the platform with new features and tools. In July, the company rolled out improved analytics for creators, offering deeper insights into content performance and audience engagement. The expanded dashboard now breaks down interactions by type and provides detailed follower demographics, including geographic data.

Creators can also track content discovery beyond the Threads app itself, monitoring when eligible posts appear across Meta’s ecosystem on Instagram and Facebook. The platform also includes trending topics, live sports scores, a developer API for automated posts, and deeper connections to the fediverse for interaction with Mastodon users and other decentralized networks.

These enhancements follow other recent additions, including multi-link support in user bios and the global expansion of advertising to all eligible advertisers in April, when the platform had over 320 million monthly users.

Threads is developing its own identity separate from both Instagram and X. Meta reports that 63% of posts are text-only, and daily users follow less than half of the same accounts they follow on Instagram, indicating the formation of new communities.
