YouTuber Johnny Somali Sentenced to 6 Months in South Korean Prison for Public Nuisance, Deepfake Distribution
Johnny Somali, 25, whose legal name is Ramsey Khalid Ismael, received a six-month prison sentence from the Seoul Western District Court on April 15 following convictions on public nuisance charges and distributing sexual deepfakes. The court detained him immediately after sentencing.
Somali, a self-described internet troll, built an audience across YouTube, Twitch, and other platforms through provocative content. Several platforms have banned him.
The Charges
The Seoul Western District Court cited a range of offenses. “The defendant repeatedly committed crimes against unspecified members of the public to generate profit via YouTube and distributed the content in disregard of Korean law,” the court said.
Specific charges included causing a disturbance at a Seoul convenience store and kissing a statue commemorating Korean women forced into sexual slavery by Japanese forces during World War II. Somali admitted to all charges at his first trial hearing in March 2025, according to The Korea Herald.
In addition to the six-month sentence, the court ordered 20 additional days of detention and prohibited Somali from working with children and people with disabilities for five years. Prosecutors had sought a three-year prison term. The court reduced the sentence due to the “absence of severe harm to victims,” the Herald reported.
Platform and Legal History
South Korean authorities indicted Somali in 2024 and barred him from leaving the country. During the trial period, local media reported multiple physical altercations involving Somali.
Somali apologized for his conduct before entering court on April 15. His mother submitted a petition for leniency in March.
