Mipcom 2025: Creator Economy Takes Center Stage

YouTube has secured a prominent position at this year’s Mipcom, the international content market running October 13-16 in Cannes, France, per ttvnews

The platform features in multiple conference sessions, including “Studios, Broadcasters, and YouTube,” presented by industry leaders Evan Shapiro (founder of the media consultancy ESHAP), Pedro Pina (Google), and Jasmine Dawson (BBC Studios). A separate content creation workshop delivered by the YouTube team reinforces the platform’s industry significance.

Event organizers have dedicated substantial programming to analyzing YouTube’s 20-year impact as both competitor and collaborator with traditional media companies.

Spanish animation studio Ánima Kitchent revealed it uses YouTube as a testing ground for new properties. Miguel Aldasoro, Director of International Sales and Co-productions, described the platform as an “indispensable laboratory” since 2014, citing minimal barriers to entry and absence of distribution limitations.

Production Giants Embrace Creator Partnerships

Banijay Entertainment is commissioning 10 new pilots with creator economy partners in France and the UK, according to CEO Marco Bassetti at a Mipcom panel discussion. These pilots aim to leverage dormant Intellectual Property (IP) from Banijay’s extensive catalog in what Bassetti terms a “test” of the partnership model.

“For us, it’s an opportunity to test, to launch and maybe to scale up in the future some of our dormant IP, because we have a huge dormant catalog of formats, or maybe to launch a new show,” Bassetti told the audience after receiving the Variety Vanguard Award.

Bassetti acknowledges challenges in establishing mutually beneficial financial arrangements with creators. “For sure, a clear business model, to be very honest, is not yet there. The only one that has made a lot of money is the creator,” he said. “For us, it’s quite complicated, because our cost of production is different from what their cost of production is.”

Despite these challenges, Banijay pursues creator partnerships to access different audience demographics and build community engagement around intellectual property. Bassetti emphasized that IP retention remains their primary objective, noting that successful brand development opens additional monetization avenues.

Acquisitions Target Creator Economy Growth

Banijay Benelux has acquired a majority stake in Werktitel, a Netherlands-based company specializing in concept development for online creators, brands, and producers. The acquisition aligns with Banijay’s strategic focus on creator economy opportunities and aims to diversify content partnerships across emerging platforms.

Werktitel’s operations span IP development, content creation, live productions, and experience marketing, reflecting the multifaceted business opportunities emerging from creator-driven content ecosystems.

The audiovisual industry gathering continues through October 16, featuring presentations, screenings, and business announcements from global media companies.
