Emerson College will launch a Bachelor of Arts in Content Creation in fall 2027, adding a Creator Economy degree to its School of Communication.
The major will sit in the School of Communication’s Department of Strategic Marketing and Business. According to the college’s program page, it combines storytelling, media production, performance, marketing and entrepreneurship. Students will study how platforms, algorithms, branding, monetization and emerging technologies shape the content people make and consume. Coursework also addresses authenticity, privacy, representation, misinformation, AI and the responsibilities creators have to audiences.
The Hollywood Reporter reported that the program will draw on Emerson’s existing strengths in storytelling, production and communications, and add creator-focused areas such as audience development, branding and business strategy.
“Our new content creation major prepares students to be a part of the evolving creator economy, teaching them not only how to produce compelling digital content but also how to build a successful entrepreneurial career,” said Brenna McCormick, Chair of the Department of Strategic Marketing and Business.
Emerson President Jay Bernhardt said the major builds on the college’s tradition of preparing students for emerging creative industries “by combining creativity, technology and entrepreneurial skills for the next generation.”
The program page says students will write, shoot, record, edit and perform across formats from their first day. For a senior capstone, they will conceive, produce and publicly launch an original project, such as a video series, podcast, publication, creator channel or cross-platform experience. The program also includes guest speakers, mentorship, and an annual colloquium where students workshop projects. Students can work with student-run organizations including WECB, Emerson Channel and the EVVY Awards.
Emerson lists potential career paths that include content strategist, social media manager, creative director, Influencer Marketing manager, podcast producer, audience development manager, community manager and independent creator or entrepreneur.
Emerson’s announcement follows Syracuse University’s launch of its Center for the Creator Economy last fall, which the university described as the nation’s first academic center for the sector. The center is a joint venture of the Martin J. Whitman School of Management and the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. Its programming includes undergraduate and graduate courses in creative content, audience engagement, and digital strategy, along with on-campus incubators that provide mentorship and funding for student ventures.
