Meta Adds AI Assistant, Desktop Version to Edits as Creator Platform Competition Intensifies

Meta previewed two major additions to its Edits video-editing app at an invite-only creator event in Los Angeles this week: an AI assistant and a desktop version of the previously mobile-only app. The company also launched several new features for existing users, including a Beta tab for experimental tools and expanded audience insights, per TechCrunch.

Edits launched in early 2025 as a direct competitor to ByteDance’s CapCut following CapCut’s temporary removal from U.S. app stores. Instagram head Adam Mosseri described the app at launch as “more for creators than casual video makers.”

AI Assistant and Desktop Expansion

The upcoming AI assistant will help creators analyze performance data and generate content ideas. It will draw on Instagram data, including views and video-retention metrics, to surface what is working and recommend video topics based on performance trends and trending audio.

Meta launched a comparable AI assistant for Facebook creators last week. YouTube Studio and TikTok also offer similar tools, including YouTube’s Inspiration tab and TikTok’s AI creative assistant.

The desktop version of Edits will give creators more precise control over editing and the ability to work on larger screens. Meta said creators will be able to sync workflows seamlessly between mobile and desktop devices. CapCut already offers a desktop version.

New Features Now Available

Among the features launching this week is a Beta tab, which will give creators early access to experimental tools in development and a channel to submit feedback to Meta. New audience metrics include demographic breakdowns and peak engagement times by time of day. Creators will also be able to search specific topics within the app’s Inspiration feed and create multiple versions of a single piece of content to test performance before publishing.

Meta said content created with Edits generates a 10% higher save rate and a 2% higher reshare rate compared to content not made on the app. More than half of Instagram Reels viewers see Edits-created content daily, according to the company.

The AI assistant is currently in testing with event attendees, while the desktop version is “coming soon,” Meta stated. The remaining features are now available to all users. Edits is free on iOS and Android.
