The Embassy of Italy in Washington, D.C., recently hosted a dialogue bringing together diplomats, technologists, and creators to examine how digital diplomacy evolves in the social media era. The event highlighted the transformation of public diplomacy through creator-led storytelling, per The Well.

“Diplomacy is really moving from agency channels and Rolodexes, and institutional events to creator-led storytelling and co-creation of narratives,” Janice DeGarmo, COO of the Krach Institute for Tech Diplomacy at Purdue, said in a statement.

Panelists emphasized that creators function as cultural diplomats, wielding influence that shapes global perceptions.

Trust Emerges as Diplomatic Currency

The forum identified trust as the essential currency in digital diplomacy, noting that content creators build authentic connections with audiences that traditional institutions struggle to match.

“Trust is ultimately the currency for success,” DeGarmo stated. “Whether it’s trusted technology, trusted communication, trusted information — ultimately, that is our currency.”

This trust translates into diplomatic opportunities, with government agencies increasingly engaging creators to reach specific demographics. Jayme Franklin Chandler, founder of The Conservateur, reported working with the Department of Health and Human Services on maternal health messaging.

Government institutions adapt to this new development by creating dedicated creator engagement initiatives.

The State Department incorporated the creator economy through initiatives like former Secretary Blinken’s “Kitchen Cabinet” of 80 chefs and influencer invitations to the NATO summit. The Biden administration previously engaged with content creators, hosting over 100 influencers at the White House Creator Economy Conference.

Creator Sabino Curcio summarized the relationship between institutions and creators: “Access is an honor. Tell us what we can’t post, but don’t tell us what to post.”

The White House recently launched a series of dedicated “influencer briefings,” expanding beyond the traditional press corps to engage social media personalities and independent content creators.

“Tens of millions of Americans are now turning to social media and independent media outlets to consume their news, and we are embracing that change, not ignoring it,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement in April.
