From Zero to $350,000: How Genni Built Scent Beauty’s TikTok Shop in 90 Days

Three months after Scent Beauty launched on TikTok Shop with no prior presence on the platform, the fragrance licenser had generated more than $350,000 in gross merchandise value (GMV), attracted over 800 creator applications a week, and earned Star-Seller status. Itai Winter, VP of Social Commerce and Paid Media at Genni, the Nashville-based TikTok Shop-certified agency that managed the campaign, says most brands still misread why those numbers were possible.

“One of the biggest things that people get wrong about TikTok Shop is that it is only an instrument to generate revenue,” Itai says. “In fact, it is a discovery engine.”

That distinction is the operational foundation of Genni, a TikTok Shop-certified agency that builds content-driven commerce programs for brands on the platform. Itai joined the company in August 2024, bringing a background that spans music industry management, artist marketing, and four years running PushTok, a TikTok marketing platform for musicians and labels.

His own TikTok Shop work began in October 2023, and the Scent Beauty engagement has since become one of his clearest illustrations of what the platform actually demands from brands willing to treat it seriously.

Brands Are Measuring the Wrong Thing

Scent Beauty, a well-established licenser whose catalog spans fragrance and beauty under celebrity-affiliated names familiar to both Gen Z and buyers in the 30-to-50 age range, came to Genni with a bottom-funnel objective. The brief was to drive intentful purchases on TikTok Shop the way buyers convert on Amazon.

Itai recognized the framing and challenged it immediately.

“Their thought is mostly about TikTok Shop being a bottom-of-funnel intentful purchase, similar to Amazon,” he explains. “In fact, it’s really more of a discovery platform with a really strong tie-in to a content engine.”

That reframing changes how brands should calculate return. A brand measuring TikTok Shop performance purely in GMV will miss the earned media value its content generates simultaneously. Itai makes the math concrete: intent-driven TikTok advertising in the U.S. currently runs between $7 and $9 CPM. At that rate, 10 million organic views represent approximately $70,000 in equivalent media value. Those same views on a well-running affiliate campaign will also generate roughly $40,000 to $50,000 in GMV. Brands focused only on the sales figures are ignoring a major portion of the return.

“That’s something not a lot of people calculate,” he says. “And then on top of that, what is the value of the relationships you make with your creators and the creative that you get from them?”

He adds a third variable that resists easy quantification: the credibility generated when hundreds or thousands of creators publicly vouch for a product. At the campaign’s peak, that pool was large enough to shift Scent Beauty’s position on the platform entirely.

Infrastructure Determines Whether Scale Holds

Before any creator received product, Genni built the operational foundation. The team connected the Scent Beauty TikTok Shop to Shopify and the brand’s third-party logistics provider and optimized the shop’s configuration across all layers.

The reasoning is practical. “When things scale on TikTok Shop, they scale,” Itai says. “They either scale quickly and completely collapse, or they scale quickly and keep scaling. Whether you set up your shop correctly is the determining factor.”

Product selection came next. Genni reviewed Scent Beauty’s full catalog collaboratively with the brand, prioritizing items with sufficient inventory depth and visual appeal. The range was wide, from $17 mascaras to $165 fragrance bundles. That breadth served different creator archetypes and price-point audiences, and as the campaign developed, different content hook opportunities.

How Genni Identifies the Replicable Hook

The affiliate engine starts narrow. Genni typically opens with 10 to 20 high-quality creators per month in the early phase, rather than distributing product widely to chase video volume. The rationale is diagnostic.

“We like to seed with high-quality creators that will maximize the amount of videos they will create for each product,” Itai says. The process reveals which creative formats connect with buyers, and which connect with TikTok’s algorithm in ways that translate to actual sales rather than just views.

The internal metric Genni uses is GPM, gross merchandise value per thousand views, the reverse of standard CPM. Once GPM for specific video types clears a productive threshold, Genni scales those formats across a broader creator pool rather than continuing to test new approaches.

Finding those formats requires a combination of TikTok data access, API, and AI tooling, and human review of which videos are converting. Itai describes the process as reverse-engineering the algorithm’s content preferences from the output. The Scent Beauty campaign produced a specific, replicable trigger for one licensed lipstick in the catalog: displaying the product in a macro shot within the first three seconds, with the licensee’s name spoken aloud.

“Slam dunk. Every time. Replicable, scalable,” he says.

By the time the campaign reached six-figure GMV, Genni was producing 500 to 600 videos per month across the affiliate network. Paid media ran through TikTok’s GMV Max engine in parallel. Live selling sessions operated on a structured arc: early flash sales to generate purchase signals, product-focused audience questions to satisfy TikTok’s comment-pattern analysis, giveaways to sustain viewer retention, and auctions toward the end of the session to hold latecomers on stream.

The Per-Sample Surprise

The campaign’s most counterintuitive finding came from the creator tier analysis.

“What surprised me is that sometimes you would have creators who generate between $150,000 and $500,000 a month with their samples being more impactful than your L6s,” Itai says, referring to creators generating over $1 million in monthly GMV. “You would expect a creator with higher GMV to do better.”

The data did not consistently support that. Mid-tier creators sometimes outperformed the platform’s heaviest GMV generators on a per-sample basis. For brands concentrating sampling budgets at the top of the tier hierarchy, that finding suggests potential value being left unrealized.

The campaign’s success also inverted a structural assumption in influencer marketing. At its peak, Scent Beauty was receiving more than 800 creator applications per week from creators seeking to work with the brand. In most arrangements, that direction runs the other way. Demonstrated commercial credibility on the platform created inbound demand.

“It shifts the paradigm,” Itai says. “There’s this awesome product I want to work with.”

Earning Access to TikTok’s Creator Events

Genni also secured Scent Beauty’s placement at TikTok’s Beauty Besties event, where the brand connected directly with more than 200 top creators. The requirements for that access are specific. Brands need at minimum 1,000 units of product available for sampling, since 200 creators at an event require at least that many samples. They also need demonstrable platform performance before TikTok will facilitate a brand’s introduction through an agency relationship.

“We have that schedule,” Itai says of Genni’s access to TikTok’s internal team. “We know the point people at TikTok that will get you into those rooms.”

Live Selling, AI Content, and the Coming Value Shift

Itai sees live selling as the category’s next meaningful growth vector, with AI-generated content handling more of the volume burden at scale. TikTok’s Seller Center already offers AIGC tools that are platform-compliant, though content produced through them is tagged as AI-generated. As that volume increases, Itai argues that creator-produced content appreciates in relative value.

“Scarcity creates value,” he says. “Creator content is going to become more scarce, so it’s going to become more valuable.”

He also points to a return dimension that most brands are not yet accounting for: TikTok Shop presence appears to influence AI search rankings. More product mentions on the platform, he says, correlates with higher visibility in AI-driven search results, a return that sits outside any standard GMV or ROAS calculation.

For brands still treating TikTok Shop as supplementary, his read on the Scent Beauty campaign is direct. “Without generating a lot of content that generates trust in an authentic way,” Itai says, “your brand will not be able to compete in the social commerce space.”
