X To Replace DMs With New Encrypted Messaging Platform ‘XChat’
X plans to replace its direct messaging functionality with a new messaging platform called XChat, according to a Digital Trends report.
Zack Warunek, a software engineer at X, confirmed that the company will delete the current DMs section, responding to a user who reported difficulties accessing message data. When asked about fixing the issue, Warunek stated, “This page will be deleted soon so no,” and clarified that “the whole entire DM’s will be gone soon.”
Enhanced Privacy and Security Features
The new messaging platform expands on X’s current DMs page and has a design reminiscent of Facebook Messenger.
According to an analyst at MacRumors, XChat will introduce several privacy-focused features, including fully encrypted messages. Users will be able to send PDFs and other files, delete messages for all participants in a conversation rather than just themselves, and enable a Vanishing mode similar to what Instagram implemented in its DMs.
Independent web developer Nima Owji shared preview screenshots showing how XChat offers users options between deleting messages for other people or themselves. The screenshots also revealed a PIN code security feature that activates when opening XChat.

Part of Broader Platform Strategy
Per Digital Trends, another X employee clarified that XChat represents rewriting the platform’s DMs section rather than eliminating direct messaging entirely. The timing aligns with X’s broader efforts to enhance platform capabilities amid shifting social media dynamics.
Elon Musk previously teased XChat last year when he tweeted about deleting his phone number and relying exclusively on X for texting and calling. In January, X Daily News reported that the platform was developing a new messaging system, suggesting Musk’s intention to compete with WhatsApp by expanding X’s communication features.
While the exact launch date remains unconfirmed, insider leaks suggest XChat will go live this month.
