UK Government Partners With TikTok To Warn Britons About Cosmetic Tourism Risks
The UK government has launched a new initiative with TikTok to inform Britons about the risks associated with seeking cosmetic procedures abroad. The partnership aims to provide reliable information to patients who increasingly use social media to research and plan medical treatments overseas.
The initiative enlists established medical content creators, including Doc Tally and Midwife Marley, who have a combined following of over 278,000 on TikTok. These influencers will produce content highlighting potential dangers and offering guidance on researching procedures properly.
“Too many people are being left with life-altering injuries after going abroad for medical procedures, without access to proper advice or safeguards,” UK Health Minister Karin Smyth said in a press release.
The campaign comes in response to growing concerns about Britons traveling overseas for treatments such as hair transplants and dental work, often attracted by lower costs and shorter waiting times than in the UK.
Safety Checklist and Travel Advice
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) will provide enhanced travel advice for those considering medical tourism. The campaign promotes a pre-procedure checklist urging potential patients to:
- Research thoroughly
- Verify clinic regulations and surgeon credentials
- Understand full costs and aftercare requirements
- Consider who will address complications if they arise
UK Minister Stephen Doughty stated: “If you choose to travel abroad for medical treatment, it is vital you do your research and are fully aware of the risks involved.”
Broader Regulatory Efforts
This online campaign forms part of wider government efforts to improve patient safety in cosmetic procedures. Earlier this month, the government announced new regulations for cosmetic practitioners in England, restricting high-risk procedures like non-surgical Brazilian butt lifts to qualified healthcare professionals registered with the Care Quality Commission.
The initiative also aims to reduce NHS costs associated with correcting complications from overseas procedures.
Ali Law, TikTok’s Director of Public Policy for Northern Europe, said: “At TikTok, we are committed to providing our community with information from trusted sources when searching for topics related to physical and mental health.”
The platform will promote the campaign content through its Clinician Creator Council, comprising NHS practitioners.
