Snap Unveils SPECS Augmented Reality Glasses at $2,195 Price Point

Snap Inc. unveiled SPECS at Augmented World Expo 2026 on June 16, its first augmented reality glasses aimed at the general public. The device is available for pre-order at $2,195 with a $200 refundable deposit and is expected to ship this fall in the United States, United Kingdom, and France.

“SPECS are the beginning of a new era in computing,” said Evan Spiegel, co-founder and CEO of Snap Inc., in a news release. “For decades, computers have asked us to look down, sit still, or step out of the moment. SPECS bring computing into the world around us where we live, work, learn, create, and connect.”

SPECS are priced more than 15 times higher than Snap’s original $130 Spectacles, which launched in 2016. Snap shares fell approximately 4% on the day of the announcement, according to CNBC.

Hardware and Display

SPECS are fully standalone, requiring no puck or tether. Built from Swiss TR90 polymer, they come in two sizes: a 47mm model weighing 132 grams and a 52mm model weighing 136 grams. Removable inserts support a wide range of prescriptions.

The display uses Snap’s proprietary liquid crystal on silicon technology, delivering a 51-degree field of view and 16 million colors. Snap describes this as equivalent to a 24-inch desktop monitor or a 115-inch home cinema screen placed approximately 10 feet away. Electrochromic lenses, using technology found in Boeing 787 Dreamliner windows, shift from clear to tinted in 10 seconds.

Two Snapdragon processors power the device: one handles computer vision and one runs Lenses, Snap’s AR experiences. SPECS deliver 7-millisecond motion-to-photon latency and offer up to four hours of mixed-use battery life. An included charging case provides four additional charges, extending total use to 20 hours.

Developer Tools and Creator Ecosystem

Snap introduced several new tools for developers at launch. Agentic development for Lens Studio is rolling out in developer preview via Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor, enabling developers to build, test, and publish Lenses for SPECS. Snap also announced the SPECS Spatial Benchmark, a Migration Agent, and a Native Development Kit.

Over the past 18 months, Snap shipped 10 Snap OS updates with more than 40 new features and APIs. Developers have already published hundreds of Lenses, covering use cases from navigation and spatial measurement to interactive educational tools.

“With SPECS, AI is not intelligence trapped in a chat box,” Spiegel said. “It is intelligence that can see what you see, understand what you’re trying to do, and help you in the moment.”

SPECS compete with Meta’s Ray-Ban glasses, developed with EssilorLuxottica, and Google’s upcoming AI glasses, being built with Samsung, Warby Parker, and Gentle Monster. Meta also hired Jim Shepherd, formerly Snap’s Senior Director of Content Partnerships, as Director of Content and Creator Partnerships, with a focus on building creator and celebrity relationships around its wearables business.

Snap also unveiled a global SPECS marketing campaign, photographed by Steven Meisel and featuring Jimmy Butler, Imogen Heap, Hoyeon, Jack Harlow, and Kaia Gerber.
