Snap Revives 2D Comic Bitmoji For Snapchat+ After User Demand
Snap Inc. is bringing back the classic 2D Bitmoji experience for Snapchat+ subscribers (16M+) through a new Comic Bitmoji setting rolling out over the coming days. The feature responds to significant user demand, including a Change.org petition that reportedly garnered nearly 100,000 signatures.
“Comic Bitmoji brings back the charm of classic avatars, while keeping all the benefits of today’s 3D infrastructure,” Snap said in its announcement. The setting allows subscribers to view all Bitmoji avatars in the 2D style and send stickers to friends using the classic aesthetic.
The move marks a partial reversal of Snap’s 2023 decision to shift entirely to 3D avatars, which introduced expanded customization options for body types, hairstyles, and makeup. Despite these improvements, many users expressed nostalgia for the original 2D comic-inspired style.
According to Engadget, Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel personally signed the petition demanding the return of 2D Bitmoji, signaling the company’s responsiveness to user preferences. The feature implementation required technical adjustments to proportions, shading, and outlines to make animations and expressions work properly in the 2D format.
Premium Feature Strategy
Snap positions Comic Bitmoji as a premium feature exclusive to Snapchat+ subscribers, potentially driving subscription growth for the platform’s paid tier. The company frames the feature as “a filter for your avatar” that reimagines the existing 3D system to recreate the iconic comic look.
“For Snapchatters, Bitmoji isn’t just an avatar. It’s your digital identity, the way you show up with friends, share your moods, and represent yourself online,” Snap stated in its announcement.
Bitmoji Ecosystem Expansion
The 2D revival comes amid broader expansion of Snap’s Bitmoji ecosystem. In June, the company launched Lens Studio 5.10 with tools enabling AR developers to create Bitmoji games, including a Bitmoji Suite for custom outfits, props, and animations.
Snap reports that over 320 million people globally use Bitmoji daily across various communication channels both on and off Snapchat, including profiles, Snap Map, AR Lenses, chat stickers, text messages, and email.
The technical implementation preserves the 3D system’s expanded customization capabilities while rendering avatars in the classic 2D style. There are no announced plans to make it available to non-subscribers.
