San Francisco Restaurant Closes After Chef Confronted Influencer Over Follower Count
A confrontation between a San Francisco chef and a TikTok micro-influencer has led to the restaurant’s closure, highlighting the shifting dynamics in creator partnerships.
The July 23 incident, which occurred during a pre-arranged promotional collaboration, escalated after James Beard-nominated chef Luke Sung of Kis Cafe reportedly criticized content creator Karla’s (@itskarlabb) 15,000 follower count and content quality, per San Francisco Standard.
“Our chef’s behavior was unacceptable and he is no longer part of the team as a co-owner, a chef, or in any other way,” Kis Cafe announced via Instagram on July 24. The Hayes Valley establishment, which opened in April, confirmed it is “closing soon and restructuring after these events.”
Co-owner Eric Lin indicates that the statement aims to protect staff members who receive harassment through calls and social media messages. The restaurant’s online ratings plummeted to 1.1 stars on Google and below two stars on Yelp, with thousands of negative reviews appearing within days.
Creator Experience and Implications
Karla’s TikTok video detailing the experience, which initially doesn’t name the restaurant, has garnered over 14 million views. Her follower count increased from 15,000 to more than 250,000 within days of posting.
“You don’t need to have a million followers to be respected or feel like you’re making a difference,” Karla stated in follow-up content.
The incident occurs amid a trend of San Francisco restaurant controversies involving social media, following similar situations at other establishments like Swan Oyster Depot and incidents involving chef Geoffrey Lee.
Kis Cafe remains closed for restructuring while Sung steps away from the restaurant industry following his termination.
