Fan Expo, which acquired VidCon from Paramount in 2024, announced plans to expand the creator economy’s flagship convention globally. The company views this year’s event, beginning June 19 in Anaheim, as foundational for future growth, per The Hollywood Reporter.
“We want to bring VidCon to the world,” said Aman Gupta, Fan Expo’s President, in a statement. “I look at this as the Super Bowl for creators, for the online community.”
This year’s VidCon will retain its industry, creator, and community tracks, which focus on the creator economy business. New additions include a YouTube 20th anniversary celebration and the inaugural VidCon Hall of Fame, honoring online video pioneers Hank Green, Grace Helbig, and Rhett & Link.
“The confines or boundaries of traditional entertainment are now completely blurred, and creators are coming to the forefront of entertainment,” stated Sarah Tortoreti, VP of VidCon. “Creators are at the center of all culture and commerce right now.”
Digital and Traditional Media Convergence
The convention draws participation from major platforms, including YouTube and TikTok, as well as traditional media companies like NBCUniversal. VidCon differentiates itself through active attendee participation, encouraging content creation on the convention floor.
“We give creators as much flexibility as we can in terms of filming content,” Tortoreti noted. “The creators themselves come not only to do business, they meet with friends, sponsors, and industry executives.”
VidCon, co-founded by Hank and John Green in 2010, was acquired by Viacom in 2018. It was then sold to Informa last year, which now operates it through Fan Expo, the company behind events like Megacon and Toronto Comicon.
