YouTube Launches “Jewels” Gifting System To Boost Creator Earnings On Vertical Live Streams

YouTube is introducing a new monetization feature called “Jewels,” enabling viewers to purchase digital gifts in bundles for creators during vertical live streams.

The system, which launches exclusively for eligible U.S. creators in the YouTube Partner Program, converts viewer gifts into “Rubies” that creators can redeem at a rate of one cent per Ruby.

The platform offers a limited-time 50% bonus on gift earnings for qualified creators, capped at $1,000 per month for the program’s first three months. To participate, creators must accept the Virtual Items Module in YouTube Studio and enable gifts through the Earn hub.

The new system replaces Super Stickers on vertical live streams, displaying gift animations as overlays directly on the stream rather than in the chat feed. While only U.S. viewers can purchase Jewels and send gifts, viewers worldwide can see the animations during broadcasts.

Unlike existing features such as Super Chats and channel memberships, Jewels does not have a fixed revenue share structure. The cost to viewers varies based on bundle sizes and ongoing promotions.

Creators can receive gifts whether streaming directly through YouTube’s mobile app or third-party streaming software. However, external software users may need to monitor their streams through the YouTube mobile app or Live Control Room to view incoming gifts. Vertical live streams must originate from the YouTube mobile app or compatible third-party streaming software.

The feature is being rolled out gradually over several weeks. YouTube indicates plans to expand the program to additional countries but has not announced specific timelines for international availability.

Creators and users have expressed gratitude for the new feature and praised YouTube for introducing it in the announcement’s comment section.

The vertical stream system is similar to TikTok Live. According to reports, teens made thousands of dollars debating the 2024 U.S. presidential race on the platform.
