YouTuber Michelle Khare’s ‘Challenge Accepted’ Petitions for Emmy Consideration
Michelle Khare‘s YouTube series “Challenge Accepted” has successfully petitioned to join the Television Academy’s ballot for Outstanding Hosted Nonfiction Series or Special, placing the online production in contention alongside traditional television programming. Khare discussed the development, along with her upcoming projects, in an interview with IndieWire on the red carpet at the 78th Emmy Awards on September 14.
“Challenge Accepted” has built its following around Khare undertaking elaborate physical and mental challenges, produced with a documentary-style approach that requires specialized training and a substantial production team. Khare told IndieWire she is currently training for a pilot’s license ahead of a stunt planned for later this year, after past segments that included recreating one of Tom Cruise’s stunts. Her next planned feat involves flying a house using only helium balloons.
Khare received the 2026 IndieWire Honors Pulse Award this spring for her work in independent online storytelling. She framed her show’s Emmy ballot placement as part of a broader shift in who can produce high-end unscripted content.
“It’s really special to get to create on YouTube because the only barrier to entry is the upload button,” Khare said. “And I think there are so many creators that are making really premium content.” She named fellow creators Brittany Broski, Sean Evans and Julian Shapiro-Barnum as part of that same wave.
Khare said the shift extends beyond access to production budgets or platforms. “When I started as a kid watching my favorite shows on TV, I always thought that the only way to participate in that world was to be fully welcomed into it by someone else,” she said. “And now to craft that story ourselves and to take ownership over it is really incredible.”
She added that the format allows for ideas that might not clear traditional greenlighting processes: “What’s cool about this new era of television is we’re making stuff that I don’t know would’ve always been greenlit in traditional [television].” Asked whether she would consider appearing on a reality competition series such as “The Traitors” or “Survivor,” Khare said, “Challenge accepted. I don’t say no.”
