Podcast Ads Deliver 4.2x ROI, Outperforming Every Other Major Channel, Report Finds

Podcast advertising delivers a 4.2x return on investment, outperforming social media (3.6x), online display (3.2x), digital video (3x), and search (2.2x), according to an econometric study from Acast and Annalect cited in a new report from Audacy Podcasts. The report, “State of Audio: The New Rules of Podcast Advertising,” argues that advertiser behavior has already caught up to that performance data: average monthly spend per new podcast advertiser more than doubled in a single year, from $20,000 to $42,000, per eMarketer and Magellan AI data cited in the report. New podcast advertiser growth reached 129% over the past five years. Total podcast ad spend is projected to hit $3.0 billion in 2026, per eMarketer.

Audience Growth and Composition

The report cites Edison Research’s “Infinite Dial” and “Share of Ear” data showing 158 million Americans now listen to podcasts monthly, with weekly listening time up 386% over the past decade, from 167 million hours per week in 2016 to 812 million hours per week in 2026.

The audience has also diversified. Women’s podcast listenership has tripled over the past decade, and podcast ads are the ad format women are most likely to recall in a given week, ahead of network TV, TikTok, and streaming, per a May 2025 Sounds Profitable study cited in the report. Monthly podcast consumption among Black Americans rose to 63% in 2026 from 48% in 2024, and among Latino Americans to 60% from 43%, per Edison Research. Gen Z listening has also accelerated: 64% of Gen Z now listens monthly, and eMarketer projects Gen Z and Gen Alpha will make up 40% of podcast listeners by 2029, with Gen Z overtaking Millennials as the largest podcast generation by the end of 2026.

Video Podcasts Complement Rather Than Replace Audio

Edison Research data in the report shows 57% of Americans both watch and listen to podcasts, while only 21% listen without watching and 2% watch without listening. Separate Edison Research data found 72% of consumers say they started listening to the audio-only version of a podcast after first discovering its video version, positioning video as a discovery channel rather than a competing format.

Mid-Sized Shows Outperform Celebrity Podcasts on Cost Efficiency

Citing Podscribe’s “Q4 2024 Benchmark Report,” the study found that shows with fewer than 250,000 monthly listeners produced a cost-per-acquisition of $70, compared with $90 for shows with more than 1 million listeners, a 22% efficiency advantage for smaller shows. Separately, Audacy’s “Power of Influencers 2026” study (1,000 respondents, adults 18+) found podcast listeners are 27% more likely to be influenced by topic experts than by well-known celebrities, and 21% more likely to be influenced by hosts with subject expertise than by hosts with large social followings.

Trust in Hosts Exceeds Trust in Social Influencers

The same Audacy study found podcast hosts are seen as the most authentic voice in advertising, at 75%, compared with 63% for cable TV presenters, 58% for YouTube streamers, and 54% for social media influencers. Separately, Audacy’s “Creator Impact Study,” fielded December 2024 through February 2025 with 15,284 respondents, found 76% of listeners have purchased a brand after hearing an ad from a podcast creator, and 84% have changed their mind about something because of a podcaster, per Acast’s “2025 Podcast Pulse” study cited in the report.

AI Adoption Is Conditional

Audacy’s “Podcast Metrics” study, fielded among U.S. weekly podcast consumers in Q1 2026, found 56% of listeners view AI as a helpful tool in back-end podcast production, such as research, transcription, and editing. Support drops sharply, however, when AI reaches host-facing elements: only 25% of respondents approved of a podcast hosted with an AI-generated voice, and 62% said they view AI as at least somewhat of a threat to podcast credibility.
