iShowSpeed Granted Ghanaian Passport Following Africa Tour

American YouTuber iShowSpeed received approval for a Ghanaian passport following his 28-day, 20-country tour of Africa that concluded on January 27, Ghana’s Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced, the BBC reports.

The passport was approved following “confirmation of the irrefutable ties of iShowSpeed to Ghana,” Ablakwa posted on social media. During his livestream in Ghana, the content creator told his audience that his mother was from the West African country.

Ablakwa called iShowSpeed a “worthy ambassador” and urged him to “keep making our great nation, Ghana, and our beloved African continent proud.”

The “Speed Does Africa” tour was livestreamed across the continent, with iShowSpeed visiting countries including Nigeria, South Africa, Morocco, and Ivory Coast. During his visit to Ghana, he participated in a traditional naming ceremony in the country’s eastern region, where he was given the name “Barima Kofi Akuffo” while wearing kente cloth.

The 21-year-old YouTuber, whose real name is Darren Watkins Jr., has more than 50 million YouTube subscribers. Rolling Stone magazine named iShowSpeed the “most influential creator of 2025.” Forbes estimates his net worth at $20 million. He previously received “Streamer of the Year” at the 2025 Streamer Awards in December at The Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles.

According to the BBC, Ghana granted citizenship to more than 500 diaspora members in 2024, including singer Stevie Wonder. Other West African countries have implemented similar programs offering nationality to descendants of those taken to the Americas during the slave trade.
