Dr Disrespect’s Twitch Ban: A Timeline of the Inappropriate Messages Controversy

When Twitch permanently banned Guy “Dr Disrespect” Beahm in June 2020, the platform offered no public explanation. One of live streaming’s most recognizable figures disappeared overnight, and for four years, neither Twitch nor Beahm clarified the rationale for the decision. That silence ended in mid-2024, when former Twitch employees began publicly describing what they say prompted the ban: sexually explicit messages sent to a minor through Twitch’s Whispers messaging system.

The messages, which reportedly occurred in 2017, remained undisclosed publicly until former employees spoke out years later. Reporting from Rolling Stone, The Verge, Bloomberg, and Poprant has since outlined how Twitch handled the case internally, how Beahm responded, and why the controversy continues to shape his career and partnerships.

The 2020 Ban and Twitch’s Initial Silence

Twitch permanently banned Beahm on June 26, 2020, five days after the platform announced it would take firm action on credible sexual misconduct allegations during a broader #MeToo reckoning within the gaming community.

At the time, Twitch confirmed only that Beahm had violated its community guidelines, declining to provide further details despite his status as one of the platform’s most popular creators, with roughly 4 million followers.

The ban came just three months after Beahm signed an exclusive two-year contract with Twitch that he described as a “life-changing” deal. Discord subsequently removed him from its partnership program. Beahm later sued Twitch, alleging financial losses and reputational harm.

The lawsuit was settled in 2022, with neither party admitting wrongdoing.

Twitch’s Internal Investigation and Response

Behind the scenes, Twitch had launched an internal investigation into sexual misconduct allegations involving creators. According to Rolling Stone, the company formed an incident response team code-named “Gold Sparrow” in June 2020 to evaluate reports, including the case involving Beahm.

A former Twitch trust and safety employee who worked at the company during the investigation told Rolling Stone that the severity of the conduct became apparent quickly. “After viewing the contents of the Whisper conversation, it quickly became clear the egregiousness of conduct and what actions Twitch must take,” the former employee said. “The decision to permanently terminate Beahm was relatively quick, due to the severity of the behavior.”

A source with knowledge of the situation told Rolling Stone that Twitch reported Beahm to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children on the day of his ban, as required under federal law. The source said they were not aware of whether that report led to a formal investigation.

Former Employees Describe the Messages

Details of the case remained private until June 2024, when former Twitch employee Cody Conners posted on social media that Beahm “got banned because [he] got caught sexting a minor in the then existing Twitch Whispers product” and was “trying to meet up with her at TwitchCon.”

Additional accounts from former Twitch employees soon followed. A former trust and safety employee told Rolling Stone that Beahm continued sending sexually graphic messages after learning the recipient was underage. “I recall that Dr Disrespect was made aware by the individual that they were underage during the conversation, after which he indicated that this was no problem and continued,” the former employee said. “Messages sent after this was acknowledged were no less graphic and in sexually explicit nature than before.”

Another former Twitch employee told The Verge that Beahm used Whispers to exchange messages with a minor and discussed meeting at TwitchCon. Bloomberg reported that three sources confirmed Beahm was removed for sending sexually explicit direct messages to a minor, with two of those sources stating that he asked about TwitchCon plans.

Beahm’s Public Statements

Beahm addressed the ban publicly for the first time in June 2024, shortly after Conners’ post circulated widely. In a statement on X, Beahm acknowledged exchanging messages with a minor, but denied criminal intent or illegal conduct.

“Were there Twitch Whisper messages with an individual minor back in 2017? The answer is yes,” Beahm wrote. “Were there real intentions behind these messages, the answer is absolutely not. These were casual, mutual conversations that sometimes leaned too much in the direction of being inappropriate, but nothing more. Nothing illegal happened, no pictures were shared, no crimes were committed, I never even met the individual.”

In October 2024, Beahm reacted angrily to renewed accusations, writing “Who said that? Wasn’t me you brainwashed f***ing idiot” in response to a social media user who accused him of attempting to sleep with an underage girl, according to Poprant.

Professional Fallout

The renewed scrutiny had immediate professional consequences. Midnight Society, the game studio Beahm co-founded, terminated its relationship with him in June 2024. The studio later announced significant layoffs in September 2024 and shut down in January 2025 before releasing its first game.

YouTube demonetized Beahm’s channel in June 2024 for violating its Creator Responsibility policy and suspended him from the platform’s partner program. Monetization was reinstated in January 2025 after “careful review of the channel’s recent activity,” according to YouTube spokesperson Boot Bullwinkle.

Ryan Wyatt, YouTube’s former Global Head of Gaming Partnerships, told Rolling Stone that Beahm was not offered a platform contract because of information about his Twitch ban. “A Twitch employee and journalists investigating the incident told YouTube employees that it involved inappropriate messages to a minor,” Wyatt said.

Other partners also cut ties. Turtle Beach ended its relationship with Beahm; NBA 2K24 removed him from the game; the San Francisco 49ers severed their association; and Creative Artists Agency confirmed to Rolling Stone that Beahm is no longer a client.

Current Status

Despite the fallout, Beahm has continued to stream. In November 2024, he announced that he had joined Rumble, where he produces a mix of free and paid content and serves as an advisor focused on building the platform’s gaming community. He also continues streaming on YouTube following the reinstatement of monetization.
