YouTube Adds iShowSpeed To NFL Debut Broadcast Of Chiefs-Chargers
YouTube is integrating influencer iShowSpeed (Darren Watkins Jr.) into its inaugural exclusive NFL broadcast featuring the Kansas City Chiefs versus Los Angeles Chargers on September 5. Watkins will participate as one of four “Watch With” streams available during the game, allowing creators to provide live commentary and reactions for their viewers, according to The Athletic.
With more than 43 million YouTube subscribers, iShowSpeed brings substantial audience reach to the broadcast. Other “Watch With” participants include comedian Tom Grossi (861,000 subscribers) and Spanish-language creators Robegrill (4.15 million) and Skabeche (13.7 million).
The main YouTube broadcast features NFL Network host Rich Eisen handling play-by-play duties alongside Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner as lead analyst. On the sidelines, creator “Deestroying” (Donald De La Haye), who has 6.32 million subscribers and experience as a former UCF kicker, joins NFL Network reporter Stacey Dales.
Studio coverage adopts a “dynamic podcast-style format” with hosts Kay Adams, Cam Newton, Derek Carr, Brandon Marshall, Tyrann Mathieu, and YouTube creator Peter Overzet. NBC manages the game production, with René Giraldo and former kicker Edgar Lopez providing Spanish-language commentary.
Distribution Approach
The September 5 game streams free globally on YouTube and YouTube TV, with exceptions in Canada due to existing agreements with Bell Canada, and blackouts in several other countries. This represents the NFL’s first regular-season game without broadcast or paid streaming access requirements.
YouTube’s platform of 2.5 billion monthly active users provides extensive reach for the NFL’s content strategy. A Nielsen survey indicates streaming now accounts for nearly half of all TV viewing, with YouTube alone representing more than 13 percent of total TV consumption.
The partnership aligns with the NFL’s media strategy of utilizing streaming platforms to connect with younger and international audiences. NFL content generated over 350 million viewing hours on YouTube in 2024, with the league’s official channel exceeding 14 million subscribers.
