North Korea Restricts Western Influencers From Upcoming Trade Fair

North Korea is prohibiting Western influencers and content creators from participating in an upcoming international trade fair tour, according to China-based tour operator Young Pioneer Tours (YPT).

The restriction comes directly from North Korean authorities, who have specified that journalists, travel content creators, and social media influencers will not be permitted to join the October tour to Pyongyang’s Autumn International Trade Fair, the country’s largest international business exhibition.

“We anticipate that once the country officially reopens, there may be stricter scrutiny or limitations on influencers and YouTubers joining tours,” YPT co-founder Rowan Beard told reporters. The company currently has “no visibility” on when Pyongyang might restart official media delegations.

Despite these restrictions, YPT is proceeding with plans to bring foreign tourists to North Korea from October 24 to November 1. The €3,995 tour departs from Beijing and provides participants with access to over 450 trade booths showcasing machinery, information technology, energy, pharmaceuticals, and consumer goods.

The tour marks the first Western visit in more than five years to Mount Myohyang, home to a museum displaying gifts presented to former North Korean leaders.

NK News founder Chad O’Carroll suggests North Korean authorities see “few benefits and major risks” in allowing social media influencers into the country, noting that influencers typically reach larger audiences than professional journalists but “are normally working without editors and tend to gain extra views through sensationalist-style content.”

This policy adjustment follows several months during which North Korea has cautiously welcomed limited groups of international visitors, including hundreds of foreign athletes for the Pyongyang International Marathon in April.
