From Streams To Building Dreams: Makoko School Construction Begins As American Influencer Donates Funds

Construction has begun on a new school building in the coastal Makoko area of Lagos, Nigeria after American streamer and YouTuber Kai Cenat donated $2,800 to fund the project. Cenat made the donation after visiting the impoverished riverine settlement during a recent trip to Lagos and witnessing the condition of the local school’s classrooms, Legit.ng reports.

Two weeks ago, Cenat toured one of Makoko’s schools and was moved by the dilapidated facilities and lack of resources for the children’s education. He pledged $2,800 on the spot, equivalent to 3.9 million Nigerian naira, to kickstart refurbishment efforts.

Videos and photos circulating online now show construction crews breaking ground on the new school building funded by the influencer’s financial contribution.

The @KaimafiauUpdates X account – regularly posting all things Cenat – has shared footage of the construction work underway, tweeting: “Two weeks ago, Kai Cenat came to one of the schools in Lagos and donated $2.8k for a new building, which equals 3.9 million Naira! Today, the construction has started!”

During his time in Nigeria’s largest city, Cenat posted a video of himself dancing to late Nigerian singer Ayinde Barrister’s music while in his hotel bathroom. Many Nigerian fans reacted positively to the clips showing the American streamer embracing local culture.

Nigerian comedian Adedeji Emmanuel Adesokan, known as Shank, facilitated Cenat’s visit to Lagos after the influencer’s night out with Afrobeats star Davido went viral. Shank provided Cenat with an immersive cultural experience from the moment he landed in the country, expressing gratitude for being able to do so in a tweet:

“First, I want to say I’m grateful to God for using me to make all of this happen. Bcos either ways, it was still going to happen. Either through me or any other creative. I’m Honored it’s me. Thank you @KaiCenat for being you…”

The school construction project marks a tangible outcome from Cenat’s trip, with his donation actively improving education infrastructure in one of Lagos’ most economically disadvantaged communities. As work progresses on the new classrooms, Makoko’s students can soon look forward to upgraded learning facilities.
