TikTok Unveils Updates To Better Manage Content Recommendations

TikTok has expanded its personalization features for the For You feed, rolling them out globally after initial testing in the U.S. The update includes “Manage Topics” and “Smart Keyword Filtering,” designed to give users greater control over content recommendations.

The Manage Topics feature enables users to customize the frequency of content from over 10 popular categories appearing in their feeds, including Creative Arts, Travel, Nature, and Sports. While these settings won’t eliminate topics entirely, they influence the frequency of recommendations as user interests evolve.

“These updates will further empower the many audiences on TikTok to explore, learn, and discover content and creators they love,” TikTok states in its announcement.

TikTok’s new AI-powered “Smart Keyword Filters” extend beyond basic keyword blocking to automatically restrict content containing similar terms and synonyms. The platform displays which additional keywords are being filtered, with future updates allowing users to select or deselect specific terms.

The company plans to double the keyword limit from 100 to 200 per user and enable bulk additions to help users shape their feeds more precisely.

Implementation and Access

Users can access these features through settings under “Content preferences > Manage topics” or by tapping the Share button on a For You feed post and selecting “Why this video > Adjust your For You > Manage Topics.” Preference adjustments use sliders to indicate desired content frequency.

TikTok is also launching an educational guide providing tips and tools for understanding the For You feed, complementing existing features that explain why content is recommended. The platform has collaborated with creator and digital safety advocate @cathypedrayes to demonstrate how these tools create more personalized experiences.
