Sony Pictures Hires Former BBC Exec To Spearhead Digital Creator Strategy
Sony Pictures Television (SPT) has appointed Matt Ford, a former executive at BBC Studios and Channel 4, as VP, Commercial, Digital within its International Production division, marking the studio’s strategic expansion into the creator economy, per Deadline.
Ford will lead SPT’s efforts to engage with UK content creators, develop digital-first original content, and build creator partnerships across streaming, social, and audio platforms. Unlike previous approaches targeting individual Sony-owned production companies, Ford’s position is centralized within the organization.
Reporting to Matthew Justice, EVP, UK & Europe, Ford will collaborate closely with Wayne Garvie, President of International Production, and Hannah Smith, VP of Operations at SPT.
“I’m thrilled to have joined Sony Pictures Television International Production to work with Wayne, Matthew, and Hannah on the group’s digital-first content offering here in the UK,” Ford said in a statement. “It’s an exciting moment to be part of such an iconic studio, especially one that has such a forward-thinking approach to digital, and I want to hear from UK creators who have bold ideas for new shows, new formats, and new channels.”
Trend Towards Creator Collaborations
Ford’s appointment reflects the broader industry shift as traditional media companies increasingly partner with digital creators. Recent examples include Channel 4’s comedy YouTube channel and Netflix’s acquisition of UK YouTube hits, such as the Sidemen’s “Inside” and “Blue Therapy.”
This trend extends beyond Sony, with significant developments in the creator economy occurring. MrBeast recently hired TikTok executive Beau Avril as SVP and Global Head of Media & Brand Partnerships, while FlightStory, Steven Bartlett’s media company, appointed Leon Farrell from Warner Music as Product Director for its Creator Ventures Studio.
Experienced Digital Strategist
Ford brings substantial experience to the role, having previously launched Channel 4’s 4Studio and led digital commercial strategies for BBC Studios, Social Chain, Cowshed Collective, and Vice. He is also co-founder of CoLabX, a digital-first media business.
As part of Sony’s ongoing talent acquisition strategy, the company recently recruited Charlotte Moore from the BBC to run “The Crown” producer Left Bank while also serving as Creative Director of international production at Sony Pictures Television.
