Snapchat Introduces Paid Storage Plans As Platform Hits 1 Trillion Saved Memories
Snapchat is implementing a 5GB cap on free Memories storage and introducing paid plans for users who exceed this limit. The move comes as the platform reveals users have saved more than 1 trillion Memories since the feature launched in 2016.
The new Memories Storage Plans target users with “thousands of Snaps” exceeding the 5GB threshold. Snapchat offers three subscription tiers: a standard 100GB plan, 250GB with Snapchat+, and 5TB with Snapchat Platinum. The company provides a 12-month grace period of temporary storage for content exceeding the limit, during which users can upgrade or download their content directly to their devices.
“For the vast majority of Snapchatters, who have less than 5GB of Memories, nothing will change,” Snapchat stated in its announcement.
Snapchat frames the pricing change as necessary to sustain the Memories feature long-term. The company positions Memories as distinct from standard camera rolls, emphasizing that users specifically choose to preserve meaningful moments on the platform.
“We want to make sure that our community can continue to store all of their Memories over the long term,” Snapchat explained.
User Impact
The 5GB free tier remains sufficient for most users’ needs, accommodating thousands of photos and videos. However, long-term heavy users who have accumulated content since the feature’s 2016 launch will need to consider subscription options or local storage alternatives.
Acknowledging the shift in its business model, Snapchat noted: “It’s never easy to transition from receiving a service for free to paying for it, but we hope the value we provide with Memories is worth the cost.”
Analysts view the storage plans as a way for Snapchat to monetize a feature that has grown beyond initial projections while maintaining its core functionality for most users.
