Snap to Shut Down Standalone Bitmoji App, Consolidate Features Into Snapchat
Snap will shut down its standalone Bitmoji app on June 30, 2026, moving all avatar-creation and customization features to the main Snapchat platform, the tech company announced.
“Starting on June 30, 2026, the Bitmoji app will no longer be available,” Snap said. “We’ll be bringing more Bitmoji experiences into the Snapchat app, so make sure to download Snapchat to continue accessing Bitmoji stickers, fashion, and the keyboard.”
Users will retain access to Bitmoji stickers through Snapchat, the Snapchat keyboard extension, the Snapchat iMessage extension on iOS, and via the web and Chrome extension. Snap is directing existing Bitmoji users to link their avatars to Snapchat accounts during sign-up to preserve their digital characters.
Snap acquired Bitmoji creator Bitstrips in 2016 and has since integrated the customizable avatar characters into Snapchat as a core engagement feature. Over 2.7 billion Bitmoji avatars have been created to date, according to Snap.
According to Social Media Today, Snap has continued investing in Bitmoji features ahead of the shutdown. In November 2025, the company revived its original 2D Bitmoji style following a user petition that gathered over 100,000 signatures. In February 2026, Snap added an option for paying users to generate a Bitmoji likeness through a Snapchat Lens. Snap also launched “Bitmoji Plaza,” a digital town center where users can interact through their avatars, in October 2025.
