Regal Theaters Teams With YouTube Sensations Dude Perfect For Theatrical Documentary Release

Regal, the second-largest movie theater chain in the United States, has announced a partnership with YouTube group Dude Perfect to release a documentary film in hundreds of theaters worldwide. “Dude Perfect: The Hero Tour” will debut on more than 800 screens across the United States, United Kingdom, Western Europe and Australia beginning September 26, 2025, for a two-week run that could be extended.

The 100-minute film, directed by Steven Lester, captures footage from the group’s recent sold-out 20-city arena tour while adding exclusive behind-the-scenes content and guest appearances. The production—moving from arena to cinema in just over two months—highlights an emerging trend of theaters looking beyond traditional Hollywood fare to fill screens.

“We need to innovate in the theatrical space, and this serves as a starting place,” stated Adam Rymer, Chief Commercial Officer for Regal Cineworld Group, who first suggested filming the tour after meeting Dude Perfect CEO Andrew Yaffe at a dinner in Dallas.

According to Bloomberg, the initiative comes as movie theaters face challenges regarding ticket sales, which remain approximately 25% below pre-pandemic levels, and the number of wide releases has declined. The late September release window was chosen strategically, as the theatrical calendar during that period is relatively light, especially after a Michael Jackson biopic was delayed until 2026.

While Regal will operate as the film’s distributor, the documentary will also screen at competing chains including AMC and Cinemark. Bloomberg notes the approach mirrors AMC’s success with “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” which grossed $261.7 million worldwide and became the highest-grossing concert film ever.

YouTube Stars Expanding Beyond Digital Platforms

For Dude Perfect—a group of five college friends who built their brand on sports trick shots and comedy videos—the theatrical release represents another step in their business expansion following a nine-figure investment deal with Highmount Capital in 2024.

“We heard from so many families who couldn’t make it to the tour, and we wanted to create something just as epic for them,” Coby Cotton of Dude Perfect said in a press release. “If you can’t come to us, we’ll bring the show to you—bigger, louder, and with a few surprises you won’t see anywhere else.”

The group’s YouTube channel boasts more than 61 million subscribers, making it one of the most popular in the world and the largest sports account on the platform. Since their viral trick shot video in 2009, Dude Perfect has expanded into merchandise, live events, and branded partnerships. By 2022, they had generated approximately $25 million in revenue, and last year, an estimated $50 million.

Testing New Distribution Models

Both parties view the release as an experiment. For Regal, it’s an opportunity to develop new programming sources beyond traditional studios. For Dude Perfect, it’s a test of how creator-driven content can succeed in traditional entertainment venues.

“We’re always looking for more ways to bring fans more of what they love from Dude Perfect in new formats that are scalable, immersive, and creatively energizing,” stated Yaffe, who joined from the NBA to oversee the group’s business expansion. “Partnering with Regal allows us to bring fans and families together around an experience that extends our connection beyond the live show and the screen.”

The film’s theatrical release will begin with an exclusive premiere in Los Angeles before its wider launch. If successful, Regal hopes the model will attract other social media creators to consider theatrical distribution for their content.
