Instagram Views Up 27% in Early 2026 as Publishing Increases, Report Finds

Instagram views grew 27%, and interactions climbed 19% in early 2026 compared to the same period a year earlier, as platform accounts published 24% more content across all formats, according to new research from social media analytics firm Metricool.

The company analyzed 24.36 million posts from 375,118 accounts worldwide, covering January and February of 2025 and 2026. Accounts are segmented into five tiers by follower count, from Tiny (under 2,000 followers) to Huge (over 1 million). The study reports figures as averages per post.

1. Format Performance Varies Widely

Accounts published 12% more single-image posts, 24% more carousels, and 35% more Reels year over year. The three formats produced different results.

Reels generated 1,035.48 average interactions per post, more than four times the 237.69 average for single-image posts. Reels were the only format to record an engagement rate increase, rising 24.76% year over year. Reach grew 11.69% and views increased 1.69%.

Single-image posts declined across most metrics. Reach fell 21.96%, interactions dropped 25.41%, and the engagement rate fell 45.98%.

2. Reel Watch Time More Than Doubles

Average watch time per Reel reached 8.5 seconds in 2026, up 118% from 4 seconds in 2025. Total Reel view time rose 139% and shares increased 67%, the largest year-over-year gain among Reel interaction metrics.

The study found that Instagram Reels generated 29% fewer views and 14% fewer interactions on average than TikTok videos during the same period.

3. Carousels Generate Nine Times More Saves Than Single-Image Posts

Carousels outperformed single-image posts across every measured metric, generating nine times more saves, more than double the reach and views, and nearly four times the interactions. The average carousel received 897.06 interactions per post, compared to 237.69 for single-image posts.

Despite those results, accounts published carousels 37% less frequently than single-image posts. Shares rose across all account size tiers, with Small accounts recording 116% growth and Huge accounts recording 131% growth.

On a cross-platform basis, Instagram carousels generated 4.7 times more views and 5.8 times more interactions than TikTok carousels during the same period.

4. Call-to-Action Type Shapes Engagement Outcome

Posts with captions that asked for comments generated 203% more comments than the platform average. Posts requesting saves produced 92% more saves. Posts that asked for likes, however, received 5% fewer likes than the platform average. Posts that included a question in the caption generated 37% more comments than posts without one.

5. Hashtags Lose Ground as Caption Keywords Gain Relevance

Posts that included at least one hashtag received 32% fewer views and 34% fewer interactions than posts without them. Metricool noted that Instagram indexes captions via keyword search and that since July 2025, public posts appear in Google and Bing results. “The words you use in your captions now work for you beyond the platform,” the report stated.

6. Stories Reach Declines While Replies Rise

Stories reach fell 2% year over year. Replies rose 88% and exits declined 6%. Both trends held across account tiers, with replies more than doubling for Tiny and Huge accounts.

7. Most Views Arrive Within Three Days of Publication

70% of total Instagram views occurred within the first three days after a post went live. For Reels, 65% of views and 61% of interactions accumulated in that window. For single-image posts and carousels, 76% of views and 75% of interactions came in within the same period. The study identified 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. as the global peak engagement window across all days of the week, based on data sourced directly from Instagram’s API.

8. Account Growth Concentrates Among Smaller Accounts

8.93% of Instagram accounts moved into a higher follower tier during the study period. Growth rates were highest among smaller accounts: 11% of Small accounts (2,000 to 10,000 followers) and 10% of Tiny accounts moved up a tier, compared to 3% of Medium accounts and 1% of Big accounts. Among major social platforms tracked in the study, Instagram ranked second in overall account growth rate, behind TikTok at 16%.
