Instagram Launches Standalone ‘Edits’ App With CapCut-like Features
Instagram released its standalone video creation app “Edits” globally on Tuesday, April 22, offering creators a toolkit that consolidates the video production workflow into a single platform. The free application, available on both iOS and Android devices, allows users to sign in with their Instagram accounts.
The new app addresses the fragmented workflow often experienced by content creators by providing an integrated environment for ideation, production, and analytics. Users can track concepts, manage projects, and export watermark-free videos without switching between multiple applications.
“Instagram exists to help people express their creativity, and we want to build the best creative tools to help you do this, not just on Instagram or Facebook, but on any platform,” the company stated in its official blog post.

Advanced Editing Capabilities
Edits incorporates several advanced features similar to those found in ByteDance’s CapCut app, including:
- Background replacement functionality
- Automatic captioning systems
- AI-powered animation tools that can convert static images into video content
- Frame-accurate timeline editing
- Performance insights for content optimization
Timing Amid ByteDance App Uncertainty
The launch comes as TikTok and CapCut face regulatory challenges in the United States. Earlier this month, President Donald Trump extended ByteDance’s deadline to divest TikTok’s U.S. operations to mid-June, marking the second extension of the potential ban.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri addressed the timing in a January Reel: “There’s a lot going on in the world right now and no matter what happens, we think it’s our job to create the most compelling creative tools for those of you who make videos for not just Instagram but for platforms out there.”
Upcoming Features
Instagram has announced plans to enhance Edits with additional capabilities, including keyframe animation controls, AI-based video modification tools, collaboration features for sharing drafts, and expanded creative options such as new fonts, text animations, and royalty-free music.Instagram released its standalone video creation app “Edits” globally on Tuesday, April 22, offering creators a toolkit that consolidates the video production workflow into a single platform.
