e.l.f. Cosmetics Launches True Crime Mockumentary to Spotlight TikTok Bathroom Counter Clutter Trend
e.l.f. Cosmetics has released a 10-minute true crime-inspired mockumentary titled “Vanity Vandals,” targeting a growing consumer conversation around cluttered shared bathroom spaces driven by expanding beauty routines.

The production follows a fictional “Federal Cosmetic Crime Task Force” investigating cases of “vanity vandalism,” a term e.l.f. defined as the act of overtaking vanities with beauty products, according to a press release. Director Alex Buono helmed the film, which stars Gary Kraus, Christina Chang, Phoebe Dynevor, and Christopher Sky. The film will be distributed across digital, social, and streaming platforms and follows “Cosmetic Criminals,” a similar e.l.f. production released in 2024.
e.l.f. debuted “Vanity Vandals” at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, with a red carpet hosted by Ellen K of iHeartMedia’s KOST 103.5, a live Twitch watch party, a Q&A with the cast and director, and a digital activation in the brand’s Roblox experience, e.l.f.UP!
Consumer Data Behind the Campaign
e.l.f. grounded the campaign in consumer behavior data. According to a survey conducted by OnePoll for Triton Showers and reported by StudyFinds, nearly one in five people report having ended a relationship over a partner’s bathroom habits.
On TikTok, content tagged #makeupmess has accumulated 115 million views, while #messyvanity has reached 1.3 million views and #messysink has surpassed 1.2 million views.
“At e.l.f., everything starts with our community,” said Patrick O’Keefe, Chief Integrated Marketing Officer. “We saw this growing conversation around messy shared bathroom spaces and beauty routines, and we knew we had to show them we were listening in a way that is unmistakably e.l.f.”
Alongside the film, e.l.f. launched two limited-edition product bundles and the “Save Our Sink” contest, running April 2 through April 16, in which consumers can submit their stories for a chance to win a prize package valued at over $10,000. The grand prize includes a year’s supply of e.l.f. products, a vanity design consultation, and a Target gift card.
