‘Chicken Shop Date’ Creator Amelia Dimoldenberg Developing BBC Young Adult Drama
Amelia Dimoldenberg, the YouTube creator behind “Chicken Shop Date,” is developing a young adult drama series for the BBC, she said at the Edinburgh TV Festival.
Dimoldenberg described the project as “my version of Skins,” referencing the Channel 4 series that launched the careers of Nicholas Hoult, Jack O’Connell and Kaya Scodelario. She said the development process had been protracted but that she would “will it into existence,” pointing to how she built “Chicken Shop Date” and her upcoming romantic comedy with Amazon MGM Studios’ Orion Pictures. Dimoldenberg is writing the BBC series herself. The project has not been officially greenlit, and she gave no further details on plot.
The drama adds to a slate Dimoldenberg is building through her production company, Dimz Inc. Her YouTube series “Passenger Princess,” produced through Dimz Inc. in partnership with Formula 1, returned for a second season on July 22, pairing her with six F1 drivers across the Spanish and Austrian Grands Prix after a first season that drew more than 289 million views. Speaking to F1 about that series, Dimoldenberg described creative control as central to her partnerships: “My team and I are always striving to develop projects that differ from what already exists; we like to say we are ‘allergic to being generic.'”
The BBC drama extends a pattern in which Dimoldenberg has moved from a single hit format into a broader media business built around passion projects, spanning YouTube originals, a film deal and now scripted television.
Dimoldenberg also touched on her interview ambitions at Edinburgh, telling the festival she would like to land Timothée Chalamet and had asked her team to pursue Pope Leo XIV for “Chicken Shop Date,” while reaffirming that she maintains a no-royal-family policy for the show.
