Australian National Film and Sound Archive Adds 10 YouTube Creators to National Collection

The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia has selected 10 Australian YouTube creators for inclusion in the country’s national audiovisual collection, in partnership with YouTube. The initiative, called “Creator Capsule,” preserves the work of online creators as part of the archive’s national audiovisual collection.

The 10 creators named to the “Class of 2026” are Beau Miles, Bounce Patrol, communitychannel, Eddie Woo, GLITCH, Mighty Car Mods, Outback Boys, superwog, Tash Sultana and Wengie. Combined, they reach a global subscriber base of 84 million people and have amassed more than 36 billion total views, spanning genres including music, mathematics, motoring, comedy, animation, bushcraft and DIY.

The selections trace back to some of the earliest chapters of Australian YouTube. Natalie Tran’s comedy channel “communitychannel” became Australia’s most subscribed channel by 2009, built on videos about everyday social awkwardness. “Bounce Patrol,” led by Shannon Jones, has drawn more than 28 billion views over 13 years with multilingual children’s content. Brothers Theodore and Nathan Saidden’s sketch series superwog has run for nearly two decades and is credited with helping pioneer the path from online video to television.

The group also includes educational and regional storytelling. Sydney mathematics teacher Eddie Woo built a global following by posting his classroom lessons. “Outback Boys,” filmed in Ramingining, Arnhem Land, documents hunting trips and bushcraft with Djambarrpuyŋu spoken throughout, offering what the archive describes as a portrait of Yolŋu knowledge and identity. Adventure filmmaker Beau Miles has used the platform to document self-imposed environmental challenges, including planting 1,440 trees in a single day.

Animation and music round out the list. “GLITCH,” founded in 2017 by brothers Kevin and Luke Lerdwichagul, has produced “Murder Drones” and “The Amazing Digital Circus.” Musician Tash Sultana rose to prominence after their “Bedroom Recordings” videos, built through live looping, went viral in 2016. Mighty Car Mods’ Martin Mulholland and Blair Joscelyne have built a following around budget car builds and engine swaps, while Wengie, run by Wendy Ayche, spans beauty, music and gaming content.
