YouTube Launches Shorts Series Feature as Microdramas Pass 6.5B Views in H1 2026

YouTube has introduced a Shorts series feature that lets creators organize vertical videos into seasons and episodes, as microdramas on the platform surpassed 6.5 billion views in the first half of 2026, according to a company blog post published Oct. 27. YouTube is also adding custom thumbnails and sequential playback so viewers can find new series and keep watching.

The launch comes with new monetization options. In the coming weeks, YouTube said it will revamp the viewer experience for members-only episodes on mobile. Viewers will be able to join a channel membership and continue to the next episodes without leaving the content they are watching.

YouTube also pointed to built-in tools for reaching audiences across languages: multi-language audio tracks, AI-driven subtitle localization and localized metadata. The company said a series shot in Tokyo or Seoul can find an audience in Brazil without extra dubbing costs.

YouTube reported that 40% of views and 30% of clicks on microdramas occurred more than 30 days after a video went live. The company said this means a first episode keeps finding viewers and earning ad revenue after premiere week.

The blog post highlighted two channels. Japan’s GOKKO CLUB builds short dramas with vertical-first framing and has partnered with major corporations on branded dramas that integrate a brand’s message into its storylines. India’s Shorts Break publishes episodes at high frequency and uses audience comments and feedback to shape later plot points.

The announcement follows YouTube’s October pilot of a monthly Shorts bonus program, which pays select creators in the YouTube Partner Program for upload consistency, with additional earnings tied to engaged views. The company said that, starting Feb. 1, 2027, only creators with 10 million qualified Shorts views over a trailing 90 days will share in Shorts ad and subscription revenue. YouTube said new incentive programs would give smaller channels other ways to earn.

YouTube said watch time for microdramas grew more than 50% year over year. Microdrama-related views rose more than 70% year over year in markets across Asia-Pacific, where YouTube said creators are turning the pace of Shorts into multi-part dramas told in 60-second scenes.

The format has also drawn other commercial players. ReelShort and DramaBox, the apps that built the microdrama model, meter episodes through a coin system at roughly 20 to 50 cents each. Crocs worked with the agency SuperOrdinary this year on a seven-episode TikTok series, Déjà Shoe, with TikTok Shop embedded in the episodes.
