YouTube Expands TV Screen Tools As Creator Revenue From Living Room Viewing Surges 45%

YouTube is introducing five new television-focused features as the platform reports substantial growth in creator earnings from TV screen viewership.

The number of YouTube channels earning six figures or more in revenue from TV screens has increased by more than 45% year-over-year, YouTube’s Senior Director of Product Management Kurt Wilms reveals in a company blog post. This growth trend positions living rooms as “the new prime time for creators,” according to Wilms.

Johanna Vulich, YouTube’s Chief Product Officer, confirmed this statistic in a conversation with René Ritchie, YouTube Creator Liaison, stating that “creators who make more than $100,000 on the living room is up more than 45%.”

Enhanced Visual Quality Features

The platform expands thumbnail file size limits from 2MB to 50MB to generate and serve 4K-resolution thumbnails for videos appearing on television screens. This change addresses a pain point for creators who previously had to test whether their thumbnail resolutions displayed properly on TVs.

YouTube also introduces AI-powered automatic upscaling for videos uploaded at resolutions below 1080p, converting standard-definition content to high definition. The company plans to support resolutions up to 4K in future updates.

“We’re making the ability to automatically upscale your back catalog into a higher resolution,” Vulich explained in the video announcement.

Creators maintain control over these enhancements with an opt-out option. Original file and video resolutions remain intact, and viewers can still access the original uploaded resolution if preferred, with super-resolution clearly labeled under settings.

Improved Discovery and Navigation

The platform revamps how viewers discover content on television screens with several new features:

  • Immersive channel previews on the homepage for enhanced content discovery
  • A “Shows” design to help creators organize videos into collections for TV viewing
  • Contextual search that prioritizes a creator’s content when searches initiate from their channel page

These changes aim to prevent creator content from “getting lost in content from across all of YouTube” during searches.

Shopping Integration

YouTube reports 35 billion hours of shopping-related video views over the past 12 months, with increasing engagement on TV screens. In response, the platform adds shopping QR codes to tagged videos, allowing viewers to scan and access product pages instantly on their phones.

The company also begins testing the ability to feature products at specific timestamps within videos, creating more targeted shopping opportunities.

Visual App Refresh

Beyond TV-specific features, YouTube implements a platform-wide visual refresh with numerous quality-of-life improvements:

  • Better use of lighting in the app interface
  • Updated icons around videos
  • Improved double-tap-to-seek functionality
  • Enhanced comment threading to make conversations more visual
  • Interactive elements such as themed animations when viewers like certain content categories

These updates aim to place video content at the center while allowing supporting elements to “recede into the background,” according to Vulich.

YouTube positions these changes as part of its commitment to ensuring creator content looks optimal on any screen, emphasizing the “film and upload once” approach that adapts content across viewing devices.
