TikTok’s New AI Shopping Assistant Lets Users Buy Without Leaving the App

TikTok has unveiled a conversational AI shopping assistant and a one-click checkout tool, part of a broader slate of advertiser-facing updates timed to Advertising Week New York. The features reflect the platform’s attempt to keep more of the shopping journey, from product discovery to purchase, inside the app itself.

The “Shopping Assistant” is built to guide users through a purchase decision in real time. TikTok describes it as a conversational AI agent that understands context and remembers a user’s needs across a conversation, surfacing product details, shipping information, sizing, and availability without the user leaving the chat. The company says the tool is built into several touchpoints across the app.

Alongside it, TikTok introduced “Buy Direct,” an in-app checkout feature that lets users complete a purchase from a brand directly from the For You feed with a single click. TikTok said both tools are being developed with commerce and payment partners including Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe.

“AI is transforming how advertiser content is created and scaled,” said David Kaufman, TikTok’s Global Head of Monetization Product Partnerships. “With our suite of solutions, we are bringing together AI, automation and creativity to help advertisers improve performance while reducing effort.”

Built for a Platform Already Driving Purchases

The assistant and checkout tool build on infrastructure TikTok has spent years establishing. TikTok Shop, which launched in the U.S. in 2023, generated an estimated $15.8 billion in U.S. sales in 2025, roughly 18% of all U.S. social commerce, according to eMarketer figures.

A PF Global economic impact report TikTok commissioned, released the week before the announcement, found that platform activity generated $81 billion in GDP for U.S. businesses in 2025 and that 54 million Americans had purchased a product after watching a TikTok video. That same report found 81% of businesses on TikTok Shop said the feature helped them reach customers they could not access through a physical or online store.

Research suggests consumers increasingly want AI-driven shopping guidance to incorporate the kind of input creators provide. A study released by the IAB in September, based on a survey of 2,200 consumers across five countries, found that 56% of respondents prefer AI shopping recommendations that draw on creator or influencer reviews, rising to 65% among Gen Z and Millennial respondents. The same study found 72% of respondents who had used AI for shopping research rely on general-purpose assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude for those decisions, and that 65% said credible creator reviews increase their confidence in an AI recommendation.

TikTok’s Shopping Assistant positions the platform to capture that demand natively rather than losing shoppers to outside AI tools once a product question arises. The company has not said whether the assistant will surface or reference creator content specifically as part of its recommendations, leaving open how directly it competes with the creator-informed recommendations consumers told the IAB they already favor.

The announcement also included an “Agentic Leads” tool for lead generation, an expansion of TikTok’s GMV Max automated ad spend system that now factors in costs like affiliate commissions, coupons and referral fees to improve return on investment, and the U.S. debut of the TikTok Ad Network, which extends advertiser campaigns to roughly 400,000 third-party apps.

TikTok said its “Model Context Protocol,” which lets developers build AI agents on top of its ads ecosystem, has seen a 200% increase in advertiser usage since its May launch and is now available as a connector on platforms including Claude, Kimi, Manus, Perplexity and Snowflake.
