Podcast Retargeting Outperforms Standard Campaigns by Up to 7x as YouTube Simulcasting Reaches New Highs

Podcast advertisers deploying site visitor retargeting campaigns see dramatically stronger performance than standard buys, while YouTube simulcasting continues to expand and channel engagement scores emerge as a reliable predictor of advertiser results, according to Podscribe’s “Q2 2026 Performance Benchmark Report.”

The report analyzes more than 34 billion impressions across 98,000-plus campaigns from 700-plus advertisers, covering data collected between March 2025 and April 2026.

Retargeting Delivers Outsized Returns

Podscribe’s SmartServe retargeting product, which serves ads to listeners who previously visited an advertiser’s website without converting, produced visitor rates of 0.52% compared to 0.07% for standard podcast campaigns, a 7.4x difference. Purchase rates for retargeting campaigns reached 0.022%, against 0.004% for all other podcast campaigns, a 5.5x gap.

Retargeting campaigns carry lower incrementality, approximately 12% versus 24% for standard campaigns. The report calculates that even accounting for this difference, retargeting campaigns still produce roughly 2.75 times more incremental conversions than standard buys on an equivalent impression basis.

YouTube Engagement Scores Predict Ad Performance

Among simulcast campaigns, channels with higher YouTube engagement, measured by the comment-to-view ratio relative to other videos from the past three months, produce stronger advertiser results. The report uses promo code redemption rates as the performance proxy for YouTube, as YouTube views cannot be directly pixeled for attribution.

The report notes that higher-engagement shows also skew toward more YouTube consumption relative to podcast consumption, meaning the actual effect of engagement on performance is likely understated in the data.

Subscriber geography also predicts performance. Simulcast channels where all YouTube subscribers are U.S.-based generate average promo code redemption rates of 0.014%, more than double the 0.006% recorded at channels where only 25% of subscribers are domestic.

Podscribe launched its YouTube SmartModeling product in May 2026, a six-point system that uses ad placement, ad length, subscriber geography, engagement ratio, and ad read type to dynamically predict simulcast ad performance.

Simulcasting Continues to Grow

The share of episodic campaigns simulcasting to YouTube reached 82% in April 2026, up from 71% in May 2025. YouTube impressions now account for 69% of total simulcast impressions, compared to 62% at the start of the tracked period.

Spotify Video adoption also advanced, with 30% of the top 100 podcasts and 23% of the top 500 podcasts now opting into the feature. The report flags an attribution limitation: when a show opts into Spotify Video, user-level attribution by IP is not possible for baked-in ads on Spotify plays.

Audience Buys Gain Share; Programmatic Wins on Cost

Audience-targeted buys, defined as media purchases not specific to a single show, accounted for 25.4% of all tracked impressions in Q1 2026, up from 21.1% in Q2 2025. Programmatic buys accounted for 14.7% of total impressions in Q1 2026.

On a cost-per-acquisition basis, programmatic buys delivered the lowest CPA at $64, compared to $74 for direct run-of-network and $98 for direct show buys. Direct show buys produced the highest raw visitor rate at 0.32% and the highest purchase rate at 0.027%.

Podcasts Lead on Incrementality

Podcast-only advertisers recorded a median incrementality rate of 23%. Advertisers running both podcast and streaming audio campaigns recorded 20% incrementality, while streaming-only advertisers registered 14%, up from 10% the prior quarter.

Smaller brands, defined as those with fewer than one million unique monthly site visitors, recorded the highest incremental lift at 46% for podcasts and 44% for streaming audio.

Industry and Genre Benchmarks

Among advertiser industries, Retail ranked first in visitor rate at 0.48% and first in lowest CPA at $29. Media and Entertainment led in purchase rate at 0.062%.

By podcast genre, Kids and Family shows ranked first in visitor rate at 0.63%, purchase rate at 0.049%, and CPA efficiency at $61. Music podcasts produced the lowest cost-per-visitor at $1.29 while ranking second in purchase rate at 0.041%. Sports podcasts recorded the largest quarter-over-quarter improvement, moving up 13 positions in CPA rankings to reach $73.
