LinkedIn Launches Audience Reach Metric to Help Creators Track Content Discovery

LinkedIn has begun rolling out a new analytics metric that shows creators what percentage of their post impressions come from people outside their existing network, giving professionals a clearer picture of how their content spreads across the platform.

The feature, called “Reach,” appears in the Discovery section of post analytics and breaks down impressions between in-network viewers (existing connections and followers) and out-of-network viewers who discover content through feed recommendations, reshares, search, and other distribution surfaces.

Sam Corrao Clanon, LinkedIn’s Director of Creator Products, told Forbes the metric addresses a limitation of top-line performance data. “The new metric splits out your aggregate reach on a given post between the reach within your network, which we define as your connections and followers, and then the people who saw it that are not in your network,” he said. “So you’ll be able to see on a post-by-post basis, is that content resonating more with your existing audience or potentially helping you reach new ones?”

Corrao Clanon noted that creators use the platform for different reasons, from raising professional profiles to finding investors or generating leads, and said success metrics should reflect those specific goals rather than total impression count

How Content Travels Beyond Existing Connections

Corrao Clanon said relying on aggregate reach figures can distort performance signals. “People necessarily would look at this top line number and the fluctuation of that top line number, and then you just have to sort of take lessons from aggregate reach. But that might be leading you down a dead end,” he said.

Content reaches audiences through three distribution paths: algorithmic ranking within a creator’s existing audience, spread through professional networks via interactions and reshares, and discovery by users with relevant topic interests but no direct connection to the creator.

Corrao Clanon told Forbes that posts performing well outside a creator’s existing network tend to be topical, substantive, and actionable. Posts centered on personal updates, by contrast, typically perform better within existing networks.

B2B Reach and Monetization

LinkedIn’s B2B creator research found that 87% of B2B buyers prefer content from credible industry influencers and 82% say creator content directly influences purchasing decisions. The Edelman-LinkedIn B2B Thought Leadership Impact Report found that thought leadership content increasingly reaches broader buying groups and internal decision-makers.

The launch comes as LinkedIn expands its BrandLink program, which connects creators with advertisers and includes revenue-sharing opportunities. Corrao Clanon told Forbes that monetization has become a platform priority. “Monetization is something that has come to the fore for us for sure,” he said.
