‘Diary Of A CEO’ Host Steven Bartlett Discusses 2026 Business Playbook On ‘Hot Smart Rich’

Steven Bartlett appeared on Maggie Sellers Reum’s “Hot Smart Rich” podcast on January 7 to discuss business frameworks and strategies. Bartlett, who hosts “The Diary of a CEO” podcast, shared operational philosophies during the episode that marks his first appearance since his engagement became public. The conversation represents the first major collaboration since “Hot Smart Rich” joined the FlightStory portfolio in December 2025 through a seven-figure investment.

‘Paper Walls’ Philosophy

Bartlett introduced what he calls the “Paper Walls” philosophy, arguing that industry constraints often function as optional rules rather than fixed barriers. He references a Stanford study showing that founders who view deadlines as optional deploy approximately 300% more features than founders who don’t and reach profitability 250% faster.

“One of the attributes I look for in both my team members and in founders that we employ is: are they the type to question constraints?” Bartlett said in the episode.

He cited Zara founder Amancio Ortega as an example, describing how Ortega reduced the design-to-retail timeline to 15 days by challenging fashion industry conventions. Bartlett noted that Ortega is worth $150 billion.

Marginal Gains Strategy

Bartlett discussed his approach to business growth through incremental improvements rather than breakthrough innovation. He described this as focusing on “1% marginal gains” that compound over time.

“If I just keep finding these tiny little wins, all I needed was patience,” Bartlett said. “And all of my competitors are looking for the next big leap forward in innovation. They’re looking for some new YouTube or some new Spotify, some great leap forward, because that’s what people think the game is. But our bias has always been to aim at the small things.”

He referenced a Harvard Business Review study that found employees who experienced small daily wins, even 1% improvements, showed higher motivation levels.

Quitting Framework

Bartlett outlined a decision-making framework for determining when to persist versus when to quit business ventures, relationships, or roles. The framework categorizes reasons for quitting into two categories: “hard” (difficulty or challenge) and “sucks” (emotional or mental factors).

“If something’s hard in life and it’s not, the rewards aren’t worth it, quit. If it is, then stay,” Bartlett said. “If you’re thinking about quitting something because it sucks, the next question should be: is there something I can do to make it not suck?”

Steven.com Strategy

Bartlett discussed Steven.com, which completed an eight-figure investment round and is valued at $425 million. He described the venture as creating the “Disney of the creator economy” and identified it as his primary professional focus.

Hiring and Culture Approach

Bartlett said he dedicates 40% to 50% of his time to headhunting and hiring. He described culture as “predictable behaviour” rather than aspirational statements.

“I care more about culture than I do qualifications,” Bartlett said. “I’ve probably hired thousands of people now in my career. Thousands and thousands. And I can’t tell you once where I’ve ever asked someone what the degree they got in university or what their grades were.”

FlightStory and ‘Hot Smart Rich’ Partnership

The episode follows FlightStory’s investment in “Hot Smart Rich” announced in December 2025. The partnership aims to expand HSR’s media brand across the U.S. and aligned global markets, targeting a 10x increase in both revenue and team size.

“Hot Smart Rich” reached over 1.8 million downloads and 500,000 individual listeners in under a year. “The Diary of a CEO” podcast has 35 million followers, 14 million YouTube subscribers, and 60 million monthly listens and views. The show adds 500,000 YouTube subscribers each month and maintains a 500% compound annual growth rate.
