YouTube Rolls Out AR Tool For Shorts To Challenge TikTok, Snapchat

YouTube has launched Effect Maker, a web-based tool that allows creators to design and share augmented reality (AR) overlays for YouTube Shorts, similar to functionalities already available on TikTok and Snapchat.

According to an announcement on the Creator Insider channel, the platform has been developing and testing this feature “over the past year.” According to YouTube Program Manager Lauren Fendel, the tool enables creators to “publish your creations directly to YouTube, putting them in front of billions, expanding your reach, and giving you another way to grow your following.”

Effect Maker is currently available to users with access to advanced features on YouTube in more than 85 regions. Creators can access the tool at effects.youtube.com to confirm eligibility. However, the feature is currently limited to desktop devices, with no specific timeline provided for mobile expansion.

Published effects will be available to all users eligible to create Shorts on Studio Desktop. Creators can choose to include an effects section on their channel home tab to showcase their creations.

YouTube is also testing “Genni” effect creation tools with a select group of creators this month, with plans to expand later this year. These generative tools will allow effect creators to build interactive and personalized effects where “users can step into fantastical scenes, morph into imaginative characters, and so much more.”

The Google-owned platform is also introducing several other creator-focused features, including improved comment moderation in YouTube Studio with bulk action capabilities, and a new option to limit comments to subscribers only, with adjustable subscription-duration requirements. YouTube is also enhancing BrandConnect to help creators better manage brand collaborations.

Market Competition

The launch positions YouTube in direct competition with similar offerings from other platforms, according to Tubefilter. TikTok’s Effect House and Snapchat’s Lens Studio already provide creators with tools to build AR effects, with some of these third-party effects appearing on YouTube Shorts.

Rather than requiring creators to use external tools or limiting them to simpler versions, YouTube is now offering comparable functionality native to its platform. While YouTube has not announced monetization plans for Effect Maker, both TikTok and Snapchat have built revenue opportunities into their effect creation tools, suggesting a potential future direction.
