Instagram Study: Europe Has 12.4M Creator Profiles, but Density Trails the U.S.

Influencity’s 2026 study of Instagram Influencer Marketing in Europe puts the region’s eligible creator pool at 12,407,130 profiles against an estimated 294.5 million Instagram users across 30 markets, a creator density of 4.21%. That figure sits below the comparable U.S. density of 4.64%, even though Europe’s overall pool is 38.7% larger than the 8.94 million profiles Influencity recorded in its U.S. study.

Russia, the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Germany and France together hold 76.7% of Europe’s eligible profiles, a combined 9,514,706 accounts. Russia alone accounts for 23.2% of the regional total with 2,880,629 profiles, more than Germany, France and Poland combined. The report notes that Russia’s recorded supply cannot be treated as commercially accessible: Instagram has been blocked there since 2022, and Russian law has prohibited advertising on the platform since September 1, 2025.

Cyprus posted the highest creator density in the study at 5.57%, narrowly ahead of Italy at 5.54%. Nine of the 30 markets exceed the regional density benchmark, all concentrated in Southern Europe, the UK, Ireland and Russia. Portugal recorded the highest estimated audience-to-population ratio at 61.1%.

Nano Creators Dominate, Mega Accounts Are Scarce and Concentrated

Across reported follower-tier entries, 87.3% fall into the nano tier (1,000-10,000 followers) and another 11.4% into the micro tier, leaving macro and mega accounts a combined 1.3% of the distribution. The mega tier (1 million-plus followers) totals just 8,219 entries region-wide. The UK alone holds 2,064 of them, about 25.1% of the regional mega-tier count, despite accounting for only 14.4% of total eligible profiles. The six largest markets hold 86.9% of mega-tier entries, a tighter concentration than their 76.7% share of the overall pool.

Italy’s high overall density is driven almost entirely by its nano population: the study attributes roughly 96% of Italy’s 2.43-percentage-point density advantage over Germany to nano-tier profiles rather than established creators. France, by contrast, has the lowest overall density among the six largest markets (3.10%) but the highest share of profiles with 10,000-plus followers of any of the 30 countries, at 17.0%.

Gender Data: A Majority with a Large Blind Spot

Among profiles classified as male or female, 59.8% are female-classified, close to the U.S. figure of 60.2%. But 31.6% of all 12.41 million eligible profiles carry no gender classification at all, compared with 21.5% in the U.S. That gap means the female-classified majority describes only the classified subset, not the full creator population; female-classified profiles make up 40.9% of all eligible European accounts.

The gender balance reverses at the top of the follower scale. Among classified mega-tier entries, 55.5% are male-classified versus 44.5% female-classified, a pattern that holds in France, Spain, Italy, Germany and the UK. Russia is the exception, retaining a female-classified majority at the mega tier (59.7%), though narrower than its 71.2% share among all classified profiles. Across the 30 markets, 19 countries have male-majority mega tiers, nine have female majorities, and two are tied.

Fashion Leads Every Major Market’s Niche Mix

Among the six largest markets, fashion is the top-tagged content niche in all six, with 2,976,962 tagged profiles, ahead of food (2,251,397) and travel (2,084,451). The UK has the deepest fashion pool at 812,369 tagged profiles, 45.4% of its eligible accounts. Italy leads in food and travel supply, with 582,680 and 480,554 tagged profiles, respectively. Beauty is the most female-skewed niche in every market studied, at 73.8% of classified profiles region-wide, while tech and gaming is the closest to gender parity at 50.5%.

Instagram vs. TikTok

The study’s regional TikTok summary reports approximately 21.4 million eligible profiles against 252.3 million estimated users, implying a creator density near 8.5%, roughly double Instagram’s European figure. Influencity notes this comparison is not yet validated against a matched country-level TikTok dataset, though the ratio closely tracks the reconciled U.S. comparison, where TikTok’s density runs about 2.04 times Instagram’s.
