X Now Requires U.S. Creators to Use X Money for Payouts, Ending Stripe Option
X has moved all U.S. creator payouts to X Money, the platform’s in-house payments service, cutting off the Stripe-based system creators previously relied on. The company said in a post from its Creators account that, starting September 2, payouts from both the Original Content Rewards Program and creator subscriptions will be sent through X Money, with funds available to creators immediately upon disbursement.
Creators already using X Money do not need to take any action, according to the announcement. Those who are not yet enrolled can sign up through the Money tab in their X sidebar to receive their next payout.
While X framed the update around the speed of instant payments, TechCrunch reported that the announcement’s language leaves no alternative for U.S. creators, who are being required to adopt X Money rather than given a choice between it and the previous Stripe-based system. A company representative told TechCrunch the change applies only to creators in the U.S.; those outside the country will remain on Stripe.
A Faster System, With Fewer Choices
Under the prior Stripe arrangement, X processed creator payouts every two weeks, with a $30 minimum before funds could be released. X Money removes both constraints, paying out as soon as funds are sent.
The shift lands alongside X’s broader push to build X Money into a full financial product. The service, which began supporting creator payouts earlier this year, is part of what X has described as an “everything app” strategy, and includes a bank card offering 3% cash back, free ATM withdrawals, and other banking features. X Money is not itself a bank; accounts are held at Cross River Bank, which is FDIC-insured. X’s announcement noted that creator payouts will count toward the qualifying deposit requirements X Money users need to meet for a higher annual percentage yield. X Premium subscribers receive a standard 4% APY, which rises to 6% after meeting the qualifying deposit requirement, while Premium+ subscribers receive 6%.
X also said it will issue a 1099-NEC tax form to individual creators receiving payouts, and will collect W-9 information from creators operating as an LLC to ensure their 1099s are accurate.
